Apple Watch SE 2nd Gen 40mm GPS, $199 (was $249) at Amazon
Just like the more expensive Apple Watch Series 9, the SE second-gen comes in two sizes: 40mm or 44mm. In either option, a Retina display illuminates when you get a notification, tap the screen, or raise your wrist. Once on, you can customize your watch face, and there is a plethora to choose from, including a new “Snoopy” themed face. You can also easily read the watch face in direct sunlight or under super bright artificial light, as the display maxes out at 1,000 nits.
You can navigate much of the watchOS interface by touch, but you’ll also use the Digital Crown and a button on the right hand side. Powering the Apple Watch SE is the Apple-made S8 chip, which also powers the Series 8 and Ultra first-generation, and even a year later it is still very snappy. Applications open up quickly, you can easily start a workout, and multitasking between tasks is seamless.
Thanks to an array of sensors on the rear of the Apple Watch SE, which sits on your wrist, you can track many workouts, core activity statistics, sleep (including stages), and even take a heart rate reading. The SE can also help during emergencies as it can detect a Car Crash and falls, with the ability to send out alerts or call for help.
If you’re alright, without an always-on display or more advanced health features, the Apple Watch SE is likely the best model within Apple’s lineup for you.
