The Ice That No One Made
Inside the Amarnath cave, at roughly 3,888 metres above sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas, a column of ice forms each year from water seeping through the limestone ceiling. No sculptor touched it. No priest installed it. It rises, reaches a peak sometime around the full moon of Shravan, and then begins to shrink. By the time the last yatris descend the mountain, the shivling is already going. This is not incidental to the pilgrimage. This is the pilgrimage.
