The Amad Diallo Rangers 'pressure' factor as Sunderland form sparks pundit Ibrox 'disappointment'

Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton cannot hide his 'disappointment' at how Amad Diallo's spell at Ibrox worked out.

But the ex-Villa man insists the 'pressure' of being at a big club in Glasgow was too much for the young Ivorian, who has found success with Sunderland in the English Championship. The 20-year-old joined Rangers in January 2022 and excited fans with a goal four minutes in to his debut. What followed, however, was something of an understudy role in Gio Van Bronckhorst's team.

Diallo is up for player of the year for his exploits at the Stadium of Light but did admit his ambitions are to fulfil his destiny at Manchester United after the Red Devils paid a hefty price tag for his services in 2020.

And Hutton has handed the winger a boost claiming boss Erik Ten Hag will be willing to give him an opportunity if his form with the Black Cats keeps up. Tony Mowbray's men may also be looking to keep Diallo for a further season, with his future at something of a crossroads.

He told Football Insider : “I am kind of disappointed because when he first came to Rangers that is what we were expecting, that high energy, trickery and ability that he has shown at Sunderland.

“He did not quite manage it, maybe that was the pressure of going to the big club.

“The good thing for him is having Erik ten Hag. I think he would give somebody the opportunity if he feels that they are worthy of it.

“If he comes back and has a good pre-season then the opportunity will be there and if not he might have to move on. It is up to him and how much he wants it.“
