Before the Universe, There Was a Self That Was Alone
The Aitareya Upanishad begins with a single Sanskrit declaration: Atma va idam eka evagra asit. "In the beginning, this was the Self alone." No plural gods negotiating creation. No primordial ocean waiting to be stirred. Just atman, awareness, prior to everything it would become aware of.
