If you're living in Cardiff and after a companion, there are some dogs you might want to meet. They're all currently living at Cardiff Dogs Home and looking for a loving family to take them in.
The home operates a re-homing procedure to find the best possible home for each dog. They're all vaccinated, wormed and checked with a vet before being put up for adoption. The adoption fee includes microchipping and first vaccinations.
The dogs currently available vary in age and breed so there's a potential best friend here for every kind of dog owner. If you feel like you could give one of them a home, you can find out more about the process here.

Here are a selection of the dogs up for adoption:
Cerys
Cerys is a young adult German Shepherd who arrived at the home as a stray. She's only a year old and it was clear to the home that she hadn't received the love she deserved. She's very underweight due to a poor diet and is suffering from skin irritation and fur loss. The home says her recovery will be "strong" and that she's already undergoing treatment and eating bigger meals.
Cerys is happy-go-lucky, affectionate and walks well on the lead but will still need to attend training classes. She could live with children or even other neutered dogs or cats depending on introductions.
Kylie
Kylie is a three-year-old French Bulldog who loves her playtime and is always looking for something to do. The home describes her as a "busy bee" and a "little miss."
She's still young and will need an active home, possibly one with children or cats based on introductions. She can be hyper with other dogs but calms down after multiple introductions - and any resident dogs will need to be neutered. Prospective owners need experience with French Bulldogs or other brachycephalic dogs.
Missy
"Meet Missy, the sassy Shar Pei," says Cardiff Dogs Home. Missy was found as a stray with a "charming smile" and an amazing personality. She's active and loves to run around her surroundings.
She could be suitable for a home with older children and cats, but not with other dogs. She'll need an owner who's active, home a lot of the time, and familiar with her breed. Unfortunately due to her breed, Missy gets sore ears and might need medical treatment for this.
Leo
Leo is a smiley nine-month-old greyhound-collie cross. He's "full to the brim with energy" and "absolutely toy-mad" - and loves nothing more than running around after a squeaky ball.
He has separation anxiety so he'll need a committed home where he won't be left alone. His new owners should be prepared to work with him and help him overcome this and settle by himself. He could live with children who are used to large, energetic breeds, and with neutered resident dogs. This will all be based on introductions.
Evangeline
Evangeline has hard a hard start to life. She came in as a stray and took some time to come around and start trusting people - but is now more familiar with the staff and read for a fresh start.
She's estimated at between two and three-years-old and loves being fussed over and zooming around in a garden. She needs an active home with owners who are familiar with bully behaviours. She'd be best suited to a home without constant visitors but could live with older, respectful children. The home would be happy to introduce her to resident neutered pets.
Rocky
Rocky's an old boy and a "distinguished gentleman." This Staffordshire bull terrier arrived as a stray and always has a huge smile on his face - he's a "right charmer."
He's between six and eight-years-old but has never been claimed. He'll need a home used to the bull breed - meaning: "Absolute carnage, full of cuddles, zoomies, exploring, kisses and tug-of-war games."
He'll need to be enrolled in training classes to learn calming techniques and social skills. Based on introductions he could live with dog savvy children or neutered female dogs, but can't live with cats.
Pat
"Meet Pat," says Cardiff Dogs Home's website, "he is a year old and an absolute legend." He came to the home as a stray but he's missed out on the structure and positivity he deserved in his puppy years.
He needs a family that can show him love and happiness, teach him and create the right environment for him to be inquisitive - he's a "lovely little man." Based on introductions, homes with children and neutered dogs and cats will be considered. He can sit and give paw.
Jason
Jason is a young Jack Russell cross and he's around a year old. He's a little bit reserved but enjoys walks and smelling new things, although he's easily spooked by loud noises or fast movements.
He'd benefit from some training classes to build his confidence and his trust in new people, but a quiet home will fit his needs for a slow paced life. He could live with calm, older children, and possibly with a neutered dog or cat depending on introductions.
Yogi
Yogi is a young Chow Chow and needs a very experienced home familiar with the breed. He's very playful once you have earned his trust, but will need an adult only home - possibly with other neutered dogs or cats based on introductions.
Matched applications will be invited for multiple visits to the centre to meet Yogi and see if they're a potential fit. You should only apply if you meet this criteria.
Teddy Bear
Teddy Bear is an one-year-old Border Collie who came to the home after his previous owners couldn't meet his needs. Having grown up on a farm, he's got bags of energy and will need an active lifestyle - all the better if he has a job to do, and if his owner will work with him and put his mind to good use.
He loves an adventure, especially in the car. He's strong on the lead but loves his walks and passes other dogs nicely. He could live with another similar dog or a dog-savvy cat based on introductions.
Gomez
Gomez is a handsome older boy looking for a home experienced with Malamutes. He's an "independent gentleman" and loves to lead the way when out on adventures. According to the home, he's "a bit of a ladies man."
He could live with older children, other dogs or cats depending on introductions. He's been well-behaved during his time at the home, where he arrived as a stray.
Zosha
Zosha is a "little meatball." She's a seven-year-old French Bulldog - older, but she still loves walks, cuddles and belly rubs. She'll fit in well to a quieter home with good knowledge of the breed.
She'd be best suited to being the only dog in the home. She's also awaiting nasal surgery and will need to attend vet appointments because of her pending surgery she's up for fostering with a view to adopt. She's currently staying with one of the home's volunteers - and she's "the perfect house guest."
Hazley
Hazley is a nine-year-old Shar Pei cross who arrived in the home as a stray. She walks well on the lead but does require some work on social skills.
Experience with the breed is preferred. Hazley has grown in confidence, loves food, and is a great contender for positive rewards training. She should only be placed with children aged 16 or older, and could be slowly introduced to a home with resident neutered dogs.
Sherman
Sherman is a happy boy - he loves a fuss and going for walks. The Cardiff Dogs Home staff think he's a Boxer cross Dog De Bordeaux.
He initially took time to trust but is now more relaxed, especially after being castrated. He passes other dogs well and loves food.
A continued training plan would suit him, as would an adult-only home with a person or couple who are familiar with large breeds and willing to train him with boundaries and positive reinforcement.
He loves toys and is learning to bring toys back and give both paws. The home says: "We feel he has come on so much since arriving and we would also consider him to live with a female canine friend who is the same size and of a calm nature."
Kenno
Kenno's an older fellow looking for a retirement home. He's a nine-year-old American Bulldog who likes walks but prefers rolling around. He's quite strong on the lead and will "literally empty the toy box."
He's "fond of the finer things in life" and loves a puppyccino. He'll need a calm home with adults only, ideally where he can be independent and sit in a comfy chair and a patch of sun.
The home is happy to introduce him to resident dogs but feel a calm, similar-sized older female would be the best fit. The home says: "In a nutshell, he loves his food, he loves his toys, he absolutely goes nuts for zoomies and is a real water baby."
Ragner
Ragner is a "handsome lad" looking for a home experienced with large breeds. He's an American Bulldog, two years old, and a "puppy at heart."
The home says: "Once he has a bond with you, his whole body will wag when he greets you." He loves swimming, lazing around, and having his belly rubbed. He's well-mannered but can get overstimulated by other dogs and pull strongly on the lead.
He's sensitive and easily spooked, and having missed out on some key life skills, he'll need a dedicated owner and training in socialisation. A quiet, rural countryside home would be ideal.
Nikita
Nikita is a beautiful eight-year-old Cane Corso with "so much love to give." She'll need some help socialising but would still suit a home with a large, calm, similar-aged neutered male (based on introductions).
She doesn't ask for much and likes a leisurely stroll. She'll occasionally demolish a soft toy and her social skills are improving. Large breed experience is a must for this "lady of leisure" who is "looking for her forever sofa."
She would be suitable for children aged 16 and over.
Bandit
Bandit is an eight-year-old Malamute looking for a home with breed experience. He'd rather be the only resident dog and wouldn't suit a home with cats or children - but has a calm nature and likes gentle strolls.
His big fluffy coat would need daily grooming. A quiet home would be best.
Bear
"Do you have a Bear sized space on your sofa or a Bear sized hole in your heart?" Bear is an eight-year-old German Shepherd looking for a forever home to retire and feel comfortable and safe. He could lived with a similar-age calm female dog and he's better suited to soft strolls than big hikes.
A calm, steady-paced home where he can be groomed daily and take his vitamins and medication. He sleeps through the night, is fully house trained and good with basic commands.
He still reacts to dogs (and pigeons) but would need a bit more distraction training on his walks. He'd like to be a sofa dog, eats well, and engages with toys although he guards them a little bit.
His current foster owners say he's "very, very loving and always in the mood for snuggles" and has been welcoming to new people.
Daisy
Daisy's had a hard life. She's looking for a forever home but at only a year old she's already been returned to the centre.
She's "a sweetheart and so loving," and looking for humans who will go at her pace. A quiet home without visiting children, potentially with a calm, neutered canine who "gets the zoomies from time to time" (based on introductions and a meet and greet). Daisy will require regular grooming.
Baxter
Baxter is 18-months-old, and is "the brightest boy" looking for an active home with breed experience, preferably somewhere outside of the Cardiff area where he can get to know new people and go to training classes.
He's extremely smart and well-suited to sport and positive training games. He'll need someone with time and patience to help him with his socialising skills, which have already developed but still have "a long way to go."
The home says: "Baxter deserves the best and only the best. He has so much love to give he just needs a little extra help with how to give and take in life."
