The adorable dogs in Cardiff up for adoption and in need of a good home

There are a number of dogs in Cardiff who are looking for a new home this summer. These dogs are listed on the Cardiff Dogs Home's website as available for re-homing. And with cute faces like these, how could you say no?

The home operates a re-homing procedure which aims to find the best possible placements for dogs who have been brought into its care, either as strays or because previous owners have signed them over. The dogs will have been vaccinated, checked, and wormed with the home's vet before being allowed to leave, and an adoption fee would include microchipping and first vaccinations.

There are currently a huge range of breeds of dog looking for a new home, so whether you're after a small or big dog, an old boy or an energetic young pup, there is a dog here for everyone. And if you feel like you would make a good match for one of the dogs and have the perfect home to offer, you can find out more about the adoption application process here.

Here are some of Cardiff Dogs Home's recent additions who are now looking for new homes:

Nigel

Nigel has been described as a "smiling boy" on the website. It reads: "His infectious smile has stolen the hearts of everyone here at The Rescue Hotel since being brought to us as a stray. He is still finding his feet in the world, but is coming on in leaps and bounds and is ready to find himself a family to complete.

"Nigel could potentially live with children of 16+ who are used to bully mannerisms, as he still needs some help with playing politely. We would be happy to introduce him to a neutered resident dog or a cat that will tolerate puppy-play." Edwyn

Just over a year old, Edwyn is a young dachshund who has come up for adoption. His bio reads: "Edwyn has been learning to deal with his nerves since being brought to the centre and has come on in leaps and bounds. He still finds the outside world quite scary and needs to take it slow with new people, but is such an affectionate soul with the right person.

"We feel for Edwyn to have the best chance to flourish and come out of his shell he will need an adult-only home with dachshund experience. He cannot be re-homed with children due to existing behaviours."

Emma-Jayne

This lovely lady is a new addition to the home and has done a complete one eighty and is ready for a new home. Her bio reads: "Emma-Jayne is quite an independent lady but is affectionate with people she knows. We believe she will come out of her shell when she is in a home environment ready to shower her with plenty of love and new adventures. As Emma-Jayne is still nervous of new situations we think she would be best suited with adults only or dog-savvy children of ages 16+. Emma-Jayne could potentially live with a calm, confident, neutered dog who can help show her how life works. This will be based on introductions."

Patches

Patch is an energetic boy who is ready for an active home. "We believe Patches is between 6 and 8 years old, but you would never guess from his temperament. Patches is always raring to go for his walks and would certainly enjoy a home with plenty of space to run wild. He will need a family that is able to give him plenty of attention and exercise – this little lad would happily run all day if he could," his bio reads.

"Patches will need some help learning to settle on his own, as he can get quite vocal. However he is a smart chap with a lot of capability to learn, so we believe this will be no problem for an owner looking for an active little walking buddy. Patches could potentially live with older children who will respect his space. We would be happy to do introductions with neutered dogs of a similar temperament or a dog-savvy cat." You can read more stories about Cardiff here.

Maddie

"Meet little Maddie, the five-year old French bulldog. Maddie arrived in our care as a stray but took her situation in her stride, not letting it dampen her wonderful temperament. She greets everyone in the classic Frenchie fashion, with tappy feet and happy sneezes."

Potential adopters should be able to demonstrate some knowledge of the French bulldog breed, especially concerning keeping them happy and healthy in the summer weather. Maddie could potentially live with children, cats, or another neutered dog based on introductions.

Maisie

"Please welcome Masie to The Rescue Hotel. This beautiful lady is around eight years old and she is an American bulldog. When Masie arrived with us she was very shut down and scared. She was underweight and looking a bit worse for wear. We gave her time to settle and build her confidence in her new surroundings. Masie now feels at home and happy with her temporary pit stop. Maisie required surgery for a lump that was on her neck and a tidy up of her teeth. These procedures have been completed and she is now ready to find her perfect home."

Malaki

His bio reads: "Malakai will need plenty of exercise and someone familiar with the needs of northern breeds. His coat will need daily grooming and regular maintenance, especially during the summer months.

"Malakai could possibly live with another neutered canine of a similar size and temperament depending on introductions. We would be happy to re-home him with older children who are confident around larger bouncy dogs."

Gomez

Gomez is described as "very independent" and loves to go out exploring (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Gomez is described as an "older boy" looking for an experienced Malamute home, and would prefer to live outside of the Cardiff area. Brought to the home as a stray, he has not been claimed.

He is described as "very independent" and loves to go out exploring. A "bit of a ladies man" according to the home, it's believed that he could live with a female dog. Experience of his breed is essential for his re-homing requirements and he will not be re-homed with small animals of any kind. He will require a fully enclosed garden with high fencing.

Cardiff Dogs Home said it would be happy to re-home him with children aged 13 and over, but that this will be based on introductions.

Snowflake

Snowflake is said to be a bundle of energy (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Jack Russell Snowflake arrived at the home as a stray. He is described as "a bundle of energy" and "a right explorer." He is said to be happiest when his nose is following a scent and will need some help socialising.

He could possibly live with a neutered resident dog who has similar interests. Cardiff Dogs Home would also be happy to place him with children of all ages. This will be based on introductions and his homing criteria may change. If you are active, have some time for training, enjoy the outdoors and are up for a challenge, the home recommends sending in an application.

Arthur

Arthur would prefer to live with adults and is in need of a quiet home (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Arthur would prefer to live with adults and is in need of a quiet home. The Staffie cross is said to be nervous of new people and will need time to warm up to you, but the home said he "is the most loyal companion you could ask for" once he is comfortable.

Cardiff Dogs Home said that Arthur would need a lot of work and commitment from a new family and that applicants must have Staffie experience and know how to handle a nervous dog. He will need ongoing work with a behaviourist to work on his socialisation as the outside world is said to be a "very scary place to him".

The home said that Arthur was fearful of new people, places and other dogs. A rural location away from busy traffic and dog-walking spots would benefit him as he learns how to act politely with others. Arthur also suffers with allergies and is currently taking medication to handle it. His new owners must be prepared to handle any flare-ups. Arthur cannot be re-homed with other pets or children of any age due to his anxiety.

Meg

Meg loves to play with hose pipes (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Meg the Jack Russell is in need of an active home and could be suitable to live with older children. Having arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home as a stray, it believes she has come from a farm and so would benefit from being outdoors. Described as "a bundle of energy" she is said to love nothing more than being out in the open exploring new sights and smells.

Meg would benefit from an active home able to keep up with her energy levels and provide her with plenty of mental stimulation. While she is active, Meg is a little older and shows signs of a working life. The home said it would be happy to place her in a home with older children who were able to respect her space. Meg could possibly live with resident neutered pets based on introductions.

She loves to play with hose pipes, will catch the water and loves to jump up for it. She also loves squeaky toys and the home said she would need a toy box full of hard wearing squeakers.

Bentley

Bentley is searching for his perfect retirement home (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Bentley is an eight-year-old Staffie searching for his perfect retirement home. Cardiff Dogs Home said he was "an incredibly loving boy" with people he knew and would make a perfect companion for someone committed to him.

Bentley will need a strictly adult-only home with lots of Staffie experience. His new owners will need to be ready to work with a behaviourist to help with his animal-reactivity and anxiety. Bentley does not like to be left alone and will need someone to be home with him at all times until he is completely settled and used to his new routine.

The home said it was confident that Bentley would flourish in the right home and so they will only re-home him with people who are confident with reactive dogs. Bentley cannot be re-homed with resident or visiting children and would do best away from busy dog-walking spots while he works on his new training plan.

Zosha

Zosha loves going for walks (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Zosha is a seven-year-old French Bulldog who, despite being older, loves walks and is described as being "always ready for a cuddle, especially rolling over for a belly rub." Cardiff Dogs Home said she would fit into a quieter home filled with gentle walks and lots of love.

Zosha’s new owners should be able to display good knowledge of the French Bulldog breed. She could potentially live with another neutered dog of a similar temperament based upon introductions.

Cooper

Cooper will need an active home and requires lots of exercise (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Cooper, a one-year-old Huntaway cross, will need an active home and requires lots of exercise. Cardiff Dogs Home said Cooper had been working hard on his manners as he was very nervous of new people, but that he had come on "in leaps and bounds" and was ready to start afresh in a new home.

He loves to be out exploring and playing with toys. Described as a "smarty pants" the home said Cooper would be at his best if he was given a job to do and advised a sport like agility or canny cross for him. Still young, Cooper is in need of training, so will need his new owners to be confident with large and energetic breeds. The home said he was often vocal when he needed attention or was excited which applicants will need to bear in mind. Cooper’s new owners will need to be committed to working with him and use long walks daily to burn off his energy.

Cooper is looking for an adult-only home due to his high energy levels. Even though his social skills with dogs are said to be not the best, he could potentially live with a neutered female who would tolerate his behaviours, giving him time to learn boundaries and rules. If you are up for a team bonding exercise that is full of adventures and lots of learning along the way, the home wants to hear from you.

Troy

Troy is looking for a retirement home with a person or people who love food, cuddling, and the outdoors (Cardiff Dogs Home)

"Older gentleman" Troy is looking for a retirement home with a person or people who love food, cuddling, and the outdoors. Troy could potentially live with children aged 16 or over. He is described as always having a "smile on his face and with a tail that never stops wagging."

Cardiff Dogs Home said he required vet treatment when he arrived in its care and after investigative x-rays, the home said: "It was clear that it is a safer option to not remove the lump on his head as it does not bother him and he can live a happy life."

Troy's ears were left untreated for a long time, meaning he will require some extra care with daily ear clean and monitor closely for flare ups and seek vet treatment when needed. "Troy takes every thing in his stride and he is such a cuddly boy," his profile reads.

Hazley

Hazley is a "very sweet girl and likes to be near you while on walks or in the garden" (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Hazley, a nine-year-old Shar-Pei cross arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home as a stray and "had very sore skin and inflamed ears," something the home said was typical of her breed. Her coat and ears will be something that will need to be maintained throughout her life.

The home said she was a "very sweet girl and liked to be near you while on walks or in the garden." She loves to go for walks and explore new sniffing grounds. Hazley walks well on the lead, however she will need to work on socialising with other dogs. The home added that she did not really understand how to play with toys yet, but she would show slight interest in a squeaky toy. "In the right home she will have a life full of positive rewards and new adventures," her profile reads.

Experience of the breed is preferred when the home matches her. Since Hazley has been at Cardiff Dogs Home she has grown in confidence and is a favourite with all staff and walkers. "We feel Hazley would prefer to be an only dog, this is due to lack of socialisation. She will require on-going training to help overcome this behaviour. We feel in time she will enjoy the company of canines once she realises having friends is fun," the home said. Hazley is lover of food and could be placed with children 16 and over only.

Florence

Florence has overcome her shyness and has learned to trust people again (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Florence arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home as a stray and was said to be nervous of human touch. The home said she was born in 2015 and was microchipped, however her details were out of date and she has not been claimed.

She is said to have overcome her shyness and has learned to trust people again. She loves to run around the garden at the home and roll down the banks, being described as "a little whirlwind."

However, the home said that she would not tolerate being over-handled "as she is still learning to accept a fuss." Flo is looking for a quiet but active home and would really like a country retreat to retire in with views of the fields and quiet country walks.

The home said a busy life was not for her and that training classes would help build confidence and adjust to her new life. She could possibly be placed with older children aged 10 and over who would respect her space. After a foster period with another dog, the home said that Florence would be best suited to a single-dog household. Research and knowledge of the brachycephalic breed is essential.

Ragner

Ragner is a "large boy" but has very good lead manners (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Ragner is an American bulldog looking for a home with someone who has a lot of experience with sharing their life with, and handling large breeds. He is around two years old and described as "the biggest puppy at heart. Once he has a bond with you, his whole body will wag when he greets you."

Ragner loves to swim and lazing around in the sun. He is also a lover of belly rubs and leaning in for hugs. Ragner is a "large boy" but has very good lead manners. However, he can get slightly over stimulated when he sees some other dogs and can become strong if he pulls.

He is described as quite sensitive and "seems to be spooked easily." Confidence building is something he needs to work on. Dog socialisation is another area he will require training in. He has missed out on some basic life skills, so a dedicated owner is a must. The home feels somewhere quiet and rural is what he needs.

Nikita

Nikita has the "sweetest temperament and has so much love to give" (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Nikita is an eight-year-old Cane Corso looking for an animal-free home with someone who has very good knowledge and experience of the breed. She has the "sweetest temperament and has so much love to give," but the home said she would need help with her socialising skills.

Bandit

Bandit has a calm nature and enjoys going for gentle strolls (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Bandit is an eight-year-old Malamute looking for a breed-experienced home. The home said that he had "a lovely fluffy coat" that requires daily grooming and that he had a calm nature and enjoyed going for gentle strolls. After placing in foster with a neutered female, the home said that he would rather be the only resident dog.

Bear

Bear is described as a "sweet boy" (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Bear is an eight-year-old German Shepherd looking for a retirement home. Due to lack of socialising in younger years he does require training in this area to help him learn a much needed skill. Described as a "sweet boy", he needs some time to feel comfortable around new people. His coat will require daily grooming and knowledge of the GSD breed is something the staff will look for in his applications.

He could potentially live with a neutered female canine of similar age. Bear has some mobility issues and is unable to go long walks, but joint supplements will help with this and he may require vet-prescribed medicine in the later days of life. With monitoring, his exercise levels the home found he was able to manage fine and not be in any discomfort.

Bear will not tolerate children or young active dogs and will need a calm and steady-paced home. He is currently in a foster home and his fosterers have said that he sleeps through the night and is fully house-trained. "He will let you know when he wants to go. He has settled into a new routine very quickly.

"Bear is very good with basic commands such as sit, give paw, wait, walk on etc, and waits at junctions. He is still reactive to dogs but is able to walk on, has also been a little reactive to pigeons." His fosterers have been using the treat distraction method and he seems to be picking it up slowly.

His back legs struggle if he’s had a big walk and sometimes stairs seem hard for him but he generally doesn’t seem to have any discomfort, particularly when out on walks His profile says that this mostly shows when he’s trying to stand up from sitting or lying. You can read Bear's full profile here.

Kenno

Kenno would like his own chair to chill out on (Cardiff Dogs Home)

Kenno is a nine-year-old American Bulldog who arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home after being mistreated. He is described as generally gentle on the lead and seems to like exploring new sights and smells.

He will require a calm home with adults. He would like his own chair "to chill out on" and the home says he "won’t ask for much. He is quite an independent lad."

The home is happy to do inductions with resident dogs but feels a calm neutered female may be the best fit. Kenno can be quite vocal when playing and can sometimes come across as intimidating. The home describes him as "a large boy" and will need a confident handler.
