As schools break up for the summer holidays, now could be the perfect time to get your child a new furry friend. And if you're in Cardiff, there are a number of dogs listed at Cardiff Dogs Home's website as available for re-homing. And with cute faces like these, how could you say no?
The home operates a re-homing procedure which aims to find the best possible placements for dogs who have been brought into its care, either as strays or because previous owners have signed them over. The dogs will have been vaccinated, checked, and wormed with the home's vet before being allowed to leave, and an adoption fee would include microchipping and first vaccinations.

There is currently a huge range of breeds of dogs looking for a new home, so whether you're after a small or big dog, an old boy or an energetic young pup, there is a dog here for everyone. And if you feel like you would make a good match for one of the dogs and have the perfect home to offer, you can find out more about the adoption application process here.
Here are some of Cardiff Dogs Home's recent additions who are now looking for new homes:
Bandit
Bandit is an eight-year-old Malamute looking for a breed-experienced home. The home said that he had "a lovely fluffy coat" that requires daily grooming and that he had a calm nature and enjoyed going for gentle strolls. After placing in foster with a neutered female, the home said that he would rather be the only resident dog.
Bear
Bear is an eight-year-old German Shepherd looking for a retirement home. Due to lack of socialising in younger years he does require training in this area to help him learn a much needed skill. Described as a "sweet boy", he needs some time to feel comfortable around new people. His coat will require daily grooming and knowledge of the GSD breed is something the staff will look for in his applications.
He could potentially live with a neutered female canine of similar age. Bear has some mobility issues and is unable to go long walks, but joint supplements will help with this and he may require vet-prescribed medicine in the later days of life. With monitoring, his exercise levels the home found he was able to manage fine and not be in any discomfort.
Bear will not tolerate children or young active dogs and will need a calm and steady-paced home. He is currently in a foster home and his fosterers have said that he sleeps through the night and is fully house-trained. "He will let you know when he wants to go. He has settled into a new routine very quickly.
"Bear is very good with basic commands such as sit, give paw, wait, walk on etc, and waits at junctions. He is still reactive to dogs but is able to walk on, has also been a little reactive to pigeons." His fosterers have been using the treat distraction method and he seems to be picking it up slowly.
His back legs struggle if he’s had a big walk and sometimes stairs seem hard for him but he generally doesn’t seem to have any discomfort, particularly when out on walks His profile says that this mostly shows when he’s trying to stand up from sitting or lying. You can read Bear's full profile here.
Nikita
Nikita is an eight-year-old Cane Corso looking for an animal-free home with someone who has very good knowledge and experience of the breed. She has the "sweetest temperament and has so much love to give," but the home said she would need help with her socialising skills.
Ragner
Ragner is an American bulldog looking for a home with someone who has a lot of experience with sharing their life with, and handling large breeds. He is around two years old and described as "the biggest puppy at heart. Once he has a bond with you, his whole body will wag when he greets you."
Ragner loves to swim and lazing around in the sun. He is also a lover of belly rubs and leaning in for hugs. Ragner is a "large boy" but has very good lead manners. However, he can get slightly overstimulated when he sees some other dogs and can become strong if he pulls.
He is described as quite sensitive and "seems to be spooked easily." Confidence building is something he needs to work on. Dog socialisation is another area he will require training in. He has missed out on some basic life skills, so a dedicated owner is a must. The home feels somewhere quiet and rural is what he needs.
Kenno
Kenno is a nine-year-old American Bulldog who arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home after being mistreated. He is described as generally gentle on the lead and seems to like exploring new sights and smells.
He will require a calm home with adults. He would like his own chair "to chill out on" and the home says he "won’t ask for much. He is quite an independent lad."
The home is happy to do inductions with resident dogs but feels a calm neutered female may be the best fit. Kenno can be quite vocal when playing and can sometimes come across as intimidating. The home describes him as "a large boy" who will need a confident handler.
Hazley
Hazley, a nine-year-old Shar-Pei cross arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home as a stray and "had very sore skin and inflamed ears," something the home said was typical of her breed. Her coat and ears will be something that will need to be maintained throughout her life.
The home said she was a "very sweet girl and liked to be near you while on walks or in the garden." She loves to go for walks and explore new sniffing grounds. Hazley walks well on the lead, however she will need to work on socialising with other dogs. The home added that she did not really understand how to play with toys yet, but she would show a slight interest in a squeaky toy. "In the right home she will have a life full of positive rewards and new adventures," her profile reads.
Experience of the breed is preferred when the home matches her. Since Hazley has been at Cardiff Dogs Home she has grown in confidence and is a favourite with all staff and walkers. "We feel Hazley would prefer to be an only dog, this is due to lack of socialisation. She will require on-going training to help overcome this behaviour. We feel in time she will enjoy the company of canines once she realises having friends is fun," the home said. Hazley is lover of food and could be placed with children 16 and over only.
Zosha
Zosha is a seven-year-old French Bulldog who, despite being older, loves walks and is described as being "always ready for a cuddle, especially rolling over for a belly rub." Cardiff Dogs Home said she would fit into a quieter home filled with gentle walks and lots of love.
Zosha’s new owners should be able to display good knowledge of the French Bulldog breed. She could potentially live with another neutered dog of a similar temperament based upon introductions.
Bentley
Bentley is an eight-year-old Staffie searching for his perfect retirement home. Cardiff Dogs Home said he was "an incredibly loving boy" with people he knew and would make a perfect companion for someone committed to him.
Bentley will need a strictly adult-only home with lots of Staffie experience. His new owners will need to be ready to work with a behaviourist to help with his animal-reactivity and anxiety. Bentley does not like to be left alone and will need someone to be home with him at all times until he is completely settled and used to his new routine.
The home said it was confident that Bentley would flourish in the right home and so they will only re-home him with people who are confident with reactive dogs. Bentley cannot be re-homed with resident or visiting children and would do best away from busy dog-walking spots while he works on his new training plan.
Snowflake
Jack Russell Snowflake arrived at the home as a stray. He is described as "a bundle of energy" and "a right explorer." He is said to be happiest when his nose is following a scent and will need some help socialising.
He could possibly live with a neutered resident dog who has similar interests. Cardiff Dogs Home would also be happy to place him with children of all ages. This will be based on introductions and his homing criteria may change. If you are active, have some time for training, enjoy the outdoors and are up for a challenge, the home recommends sending in an application.
Gomez
Gomez is described as an "older boy" looking for an experienced Malamute home, and would prefer to live outside of the Cardiff area. Brought to the home as a stray, he has not been claimed.
He is described as "very independent" and loves to go out exploring. A "bit of a ladies man" according to the home, it's believed that he could live with a female dog. Experience of his breed is essential for his re-homing requirements and he will not be re-homed with small animals of any kind. He will require a fully enclosed garden with high fencing.
Cardiff Dogs Home said it would be happy to re-home him with children aged 13 and over, but that this will be based on introductions.
Patches
Patch is an energetic boy who is ready for an active home. "We believe Patches is between 6 and 8 years old, but you would never guess from his temperament. Patches is always raring to go for his walks and would certainly enjoy a home with plenty of space to run wild. He will need a family that is able to give him plenty of attention and exercise – this little lad would happily run all day if he could," his bio reads.
"Patches will need some help learning to settle on his own, as he can get quite vocal. However he is a smart chap with a lot of capability to learn, so we believe this will be no problem for an owner looking for an active little walking buddy. Patches could potentially live with older children who will respect his space. We would be happy to do introductions with neutered dogs of a similar temperament or a dog-savvy cat." Cardi and Culture
These two gorgeous girls are mother and daughter. They are amazing dogs with incredibly friendly and happy natures who are looking for a loving home and plenty of cuddles. Since Cardi and Culture are bulldogs, experience of brachycephalic breeds is preferable and any potential new owners must be well researched on the needs of the breed.
They both love to play and would bring lots of joy to any household. Ideally, Cardi and Culture are looking to be re-homed together and both dogs could live with children of all ages, cats and other neutered dogs depending on introductions. These sweethearts are both young in age, Cardi is 3 1/2 years old and Culture is only a year old. they are the perfect age to adjust to change and we feel they will definitely take this in their stride.
Rocky
Rocky is a Staffordshire bull terrier who is around 6-8 years old. Rocky arrived as a stray and was never claimed. He is a right charmer and has always got the biggest smile on his face. Rocky is looking for a home who are used to the bull breed way of life. Absolute carnage, full of cuddles, zoomies, exploring, kisses and tug-of-war games.
Rocky will need to be enrolled in to doggy school to help him learn some calming techniques and social skills. Homes with dog savvy children, a neutered female canine and cats will be based on introductions.
Pat
Pat is a one-year-old Jack Russell terrier who came to the home as a stray. The home feel he has missed out on a lot of his puppy hood and lived a life without structure and positivity. He is such a lovely little man. He will require an active home with a family who can teach him.
He is an inquisitive boy who will flourish in the right environment. Homes with children, neutered dogs and cats will be considered based on introductions. He can sit and give paw.
Jason
Jason is a young Jack Russell cross, around 1-year-old. He is still a little reserved at moment but the home are hopeful he will settle into his new surroundings quickly. Jason seems to enjoy his walks and gently sniffing new smells. He is a delicate little fella and will get spooked by loud noises or fast movements.
He would benefit from training classes to help build his confidence and his trust in new people. A quiet home will best suit his needs with a slow paced life, so he is able to blossom at his own pace. He can potentially live with a neutered canine or cats based on introductions. Jason may be able to live with older children 10+ who are of a calm nature.
Pepper
Pepper is a young French bulldog who arrived as a stray. Pepper is full of life and is such a happy little girl. Pepper loves water, she will splash in the river and chase the water from the hose pipe.
Pepper could be placed with children of all ages. She could also potentially live with a neutered canine friend or cats. This will based on introductions. Knowledge of the brachycephalic breed will support applications submitted.
Teddy Bear
Teddy Bear is a one year old Border Collie who came to the home due to his previous owners not being able to meet his needs. Teddy has had a few homes during his life, one of which was on a farm. Teddy has lots of energy and therefore will require a very active lifestyle and ideally a job to do. He is a friendly boy who behaves very well on his walks and could possibly be homed with another neutered dog, based on introductions.
Similarly, Teddy could also potentially be homed with children who are used to the collie breed or cats given introductions go well. Teddy loves travelling in the car, especially when it leads to a good adventure. He is also able to be left for a few hours at a time. We believe that as long as Teddy is given the sufficient mental and physical exercise, this beautiful boy would make a great addition to the household.
Lulu
Lulu is a 4 year old bull dog. She has a lovely temperament and likes lots of attention. Lulu came into care due to a change of circumstances with her previous owner. On her arrival, Lulu was very confused and timid.
It was clear to see that Lulu required some vet care for her skin and eyes; it was also noticed that Lulu had slight difficulty with her mobility. On investigation, it was found Lulu had a little ulcer on one of her eyes that required eye drops and frequent medicated baths for her skin. She also suffers from a deformity of the spine and knee issues. Unfortunately, it has been decided that Lulu is not a contender for corrective surgery due to the deformity of her spine. The upside is Lulu is able to live a very chilled and happy life full of love and cuddles.
Lulu is a lover of food, but this will need to be monitored through out her life so as not to put further stress on her joints. Lulu will require regular vet visits to make sure she is comfortable throughout her life.
Her rehoming requirements are a calm home where she is able to relax and enjoy home comforts. We feel she may be able to live happily with older children who will respect her space and who are of a calm manner. Due to Lulu’s needs she will need to be the only dog in the household; but could potentially live with a feline friend. Experience of brachycephalic breeds is essential for any applications submitted.
Lulu is looking for a palliative care home as we are uncertain of how long she will be able to live a comfortable life. At the moment, we do feel that as long as her new humans understand her needs, keep up do date with vet visits and follow any advice that is given on her future, she would make a loving companion who will love life.
Charlotte
Charlotte is an incredibly sweet Lurcher cross who enjoys her walks and has lots of love to give. During her time at the centre Charlotte has always been happy to greet staff and has shown a very friendly temperament. She is approximately between 3 and 5 years old and will need an active home but equally is looking for a sofa to curl up on in the evenings.
Charlotte could possibly be rehomed with children of all ages, other neutered dogs and cats. The lurcher breed requires lots of exercise so potential owners should bear this in mind, however we believe Charlotte is a lovely girl who will make a great addition to the the right home.
Olive
Olive is a 9 month old Malinois Dutch Herder cross who came into the centre via a vets. On arrival Olive was very timid and confused; however she has since blossomed and has the sweetest temperament.
Olive needed surgery on her leg which luckily our charity was able to fund raise for with the kind help of the public. Now in our care, she is recovering well and has regained her energetic personality. Olive will need an active home and would benefit from lots of long walks as she is up for any adventure. A friendly dog, Olive loves to greet people and is generally excited by life. She still requires some medical care whilst her leg fully heals however we now feel she is ready to meet her public and be matched with her forever home.
Please note Olive will continue her recovery at the rescue hotel but her matched applications will be invited down to spend time with her until she is ready for the next chapter of her life.
Coba
Coba is a sweet 7 month old chow who came in as a stray in a very bad condition, although he did not let this dampen his spirit. Coba has an amazing personality and greets everyone with a wagging tail. Following treatment for his skin, Coba is making a great recovery although he will require an owner who will keep on top of his vet checks and the maintenance that his coat needs.
Due to the neglect that he has suffered and being here at the rescue hotel, we feel he has missed out on his puppy hood training and therefore needs some help in this area. Coba loves playtime and is doing very well at learning to walk on the lead. An incredibly loving dog, Coba would make a great companion for the right home.
Sherman
Sherman is around 2 years old and the home believes he is a Boxer cross Dog De Bordeaux. When he arrived he was very bewildered and took time to trust. He is now a happy boy who loves a fuss and enjoys going for walks. he has settled in with his new routine.
Since he has been castrated he seems to have a more chilled approach to life and calming attitude. He seems to pass dogs on walks with no problems, but a continued training plan is something we would advise to help him feel comfortable at all times. Sherman absolutely loves food, this will definitely be a big success with his training plan. He is such a smart boy.
Sherman is looking for a home with a person or couple who are confident with large breeds. He will require training with boundaries in a safe and efficient manner. Positive reinforcement training will surely be the way forward. Sherman will need an adult-only home.
We have secretly discovered that Sherman is a lover of toys and he loves a blast around the garden with a toy. He will bring it back, sit, wait and give both paws. He not quite mastered the down stay yet but we can’t all be perfect can we. We feel he has come on so much since arriving and we would also consider him to live with a female canine friend who is the same size and of a calm nature.
Daisy
Daisy who is one year old has recently been returned to the centre. She is a sweetheart and so loving. Daisy is looking for a home with humans who are able to go at her pace and who will help her feel safe and loved.
A quiet home will suit her best. She is able to live with a dog-savvy cat who will put up with puppy play and be able to teach Daisy the boundaries. She could also potentially live with a neutered canine who is of a calm nature but who also gets the zoomies from time to time. This will be based on introductions and any resident pets will need to attend a meet and greet at the centre.
Daisy is not a contender for families or homes with visiting children. Daisy will also require regular grooming, please consider this when applying.
Baxter
Baxter is 18 months old and is in need of an active home and a lot of exercise. He needs someone with breed experience and is not suitable for first-time dog owners. He would prefer to live outside of the Cardiff area, he would need my new owner to take me to training classes and needs some time to get to know new people.
With Baxter being extremely smart the centre feels like he needs a home that is able to challenge his mind with positive training games that will definitely do him the world of good. Potentially doing a sport like agility would be ideal.
Baxter will require a breed-experienced home, someone who has a passion for the GSD and has the time and patience to help him learn how to be a responsible canine.
He has come on so well with his socialising skills and polite manners. He still has a long way to go and is definitely looking for someone who is in it for the long haul. He will require someone responsible who is willing to follow advice from staff and our behaviourist. He will require help with his confidence around people, bikes and guarding things, this includes his food and toys. He can also get over-excited when playing and needs to learn what is acceptable play.
He will need to be responsibly managed. Baxter deserves the best and only the best. He has so much love to give he just needs a little extra help with how to give and take in life.
