There are a number of dogs in Cardiff who are looking for a new home this summer. These 27 dogs are listed on Cardiff Dogs Home's website as available for rehoming.
The home operates a re-homing procedure which aims to find the best possible home for dogs who have been brought into their care, either as strays or because previous owners have signed them over. The dogs will have been vaccinated, checked, and wormed with the home's vet and an adoption fee would include micro chipping and first vaccinations.

Here are some of Cardiff Dogs Homes recent additions who are now looking for new homes:
Maria
Maria is described as an "older lady" who arrived at the hotel after being found wondering alone. She is Staffordshire bull terrier cross and is approximately 8-10 years old. Maria was slightly underweight on arrival but was soon fed up by the home.
She is described as having "an infectious smile" and is always happy to meet new people. "In true Staffie style she goes straight in for kisses and cuddles," her profile says.
Cardiff Dogs Home says that Maria has not yet been introduced to other dogs but that they feel she may be suitable to live with another neutered dogs. This will be based on introductions. She could also live with children who are bull breed savvy as they can be boisterous when playing.
"Maria may be an older lady but she certainly has the heart of a puppy. She has a love for the outdoors and zoomies. Belly rubs are her favourite," the site says. "She seems to be an all round good egg who walks well on the lead and does not react to dogs while out on walks."
Darren
Darren is thought to be around 10 years old and he is a Staffie mix. Since he being at Cardiff Dogs Home, he has been castrated and had a dental.
He will require a quiet retirement home with people who like adventures. He is described as a "chatter box" and can be vocal when he is excited.
Darren does like his food, he will need some help is this area to learn to share. He could potentially live with an older dog who has the same energy levels.
Kitty
Kitty the French Bulldog cross arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home in a "very smelly state," with urine stained legs and was "very frightened of the world." But the home says she has settled in nicely, "has the best ears" and "the most lovely, soft nature."
She is approximately two to three years old, she enjoys being out for walks and pottering around an enclosed garden. Training classes will help her confidence blossom and learn how life works. She could potentially live with a neutered male who is calm plus children of any age. This will all be based on introductions.
Morticia
Morticia is approximately one year old is is thought to be a Staff cross Jack Russell. When she arrived in care she was very frightened of her new surroundings and needed extra cuddles to help her settle. But now Cardiff Dogs Home says she has come out of her shell and "has turned in to the biggest flirt and adores belly rubs."
Being a young girl she would definitely benefit from living or being well socialised with dogs of all shapes and sizes. Morticia could live with children of any age and any resident pets will need to neutered. She is still learning the way of the world so we would advise a few puppy classes to help with her training.
Gomez
Gomez is described as an "older boy" looking for an experienced Malamute home, and would prefer to live outside of the Cardiff area. Brought to the home as a stray, he has not been claimed.
He is described as "very independent" and loves to go out exploring. A "bit of a ladies man" according to the home, they believe that he could live with a female dog. Experience of his breed is essential for his rehoming requirements and he will not be rehomed with small animals of any kind. He will require a fully enclosed garden with high fencing.
Cardiff Dogs Home say that they would be happy to rehome him with children aged 13 and over, but that this will be based on introductions.
Bernie
Bernie is a Pug cross who is around six years old and arrived in Cardiff Dogs Home's care after his pervious owners had a change in circumstances.
Described as a "delightful man who seems to take everything in his stride", Bernie has slight fur loss on his back which has been treated and the home is hopeful that his coat will grow back.
He has previously lived with other dogs and the home would be happy to place him with children based on introductions. Bernie likes his food and would need to be fed separately from his canine friends. Any resident dogs would need to be neutered. He is also cat friendly.
Snowflake
Jack Russell Snowflake arrived at the home as a stray. He is described as "a bundle of energy" and "a right explorer." He is said to be happiest when his nose is following a scent and will need some help socialising.
He could possibly live with a neutered resident dog who has similar interests. Cardiff Dogs Home would also be happy to place him with children of all ages. This will be based on introductions and his homing criteria may change. If you are active, have some time for training, enjoy the outdoors and are up for a challenge, the home recommends sending in an application.
Arthur
Arthur would prefer to live with adults and is in need of a quiet home. The Staffie cross is said to be nervous of new people and will need time to warm up to you, but the home says he "is the most loyal companion you could ask for" once he is comfortable.
Cardiff Dogs Home says that Arthur will need a lot of work and commitment from a new family and that applicants must have Staffie experience and know how to handle a nervous dog. He will need ongoing work with a behaviourist to work on his socialisation as the outside world is said to be a "very scary place to him".
The home says that Arthur is fearful of new people, places and other dogs. A rural location away from busy traffic and dog-walking spots will benefit him as he learns how to act politely with others. Arthur also suffers with allergies and is currently taking medication to handle it. His new owners must be prepared to handle any flare-ups. Arthur cannot be rehomed with other pets or children of any age due to his anxiety.
Meg
Meg the Jack Russell is in need of an active home and could be suitable to live with older children. Having arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home as a stray, they believe she has come from a farm and so would benefit from being outdoors. Described as "a bundle of energy" she is said to love nothing more than being out in the open exploring new sights and smells.
Meg would benefit from an active home able to keep up with her energy levels and provide her with plenty of mental stimulation. While she is active, Meg is a little older and shows signs of a working life. The home says it would be happy to place her in a home with older children who are able to respect her space. Meg could possibly live with resident neutered pets based on introductions.
She loves to play with hose pipes, will catch the water and loves to jump up for it. She also loves squeaky toys and the home says she will need a toy box full of hard wearing squeakers.
Bentley
Bentley is an eight-year-old Staffie searching for his perfect retirement home. Cardiff Dogs Home says that he’s "an incredibly loving boy" with people he knows and will make a perfect companion for someone committed to him.
Bentley will need a strictly adult-only home with lots of Staffie experience. His new owners will need to be ready to work with a behaviourist to help with his animal-reactivity and anxiety. Bentley does not like to be left alone and will need someone to be home with him at all times until he is completely settled and used to his new routine.
The home says it is confident that Bentley will flourish in the right home and so they will only rehome him with people who are confident with reactive dogs. Bentley cannot be rehomed with resident or visiting children and would do best away from busy dog-walking spots while he works on his new training plan.
Zosha
Zosha is a seven-year-old French Bulldog who, despite being older, loves walks and is described as being "always ready for a cuddle, especially rolling over for a belly rub." Cardiff Dogs Home says that she will fit into a quieter home filled with gentle walks and lots of love.
Zosha’s new owners should be able to display good knowledge of the French Bulldog breed. She could potentially live with another neutered dog of a similar temperament based upon introductions.
Cooper
Cooper, a one-year-old Huntaway cross, will need an active home and requires lots of exercise. Cardiff Dogs Home says that Cooper has been working hard on his manners as he was very nervous of new people, but that he has come on "in leaps and bounds" and is ready to start afresh in a new home.
He loves to be out exploring and playing with toys. Described as a "smarty pants" the home says Cooper would be at his best if he was given a job to do and advise a sport like agility or canny cross for him. Still young, Cooper is in need of training, so will need his new owners to be confident with large and energetic breeds.
The home says that he is often vocal when he needs attention or is excited which applicants will need to bear in mind. Cooper’s new owners will need to be committed to working with him and long walks daily to burn off his energy.
Cooper is looking for an adult only home due to his high energy levels. Even though his social skills with dogs are said to be not the best, he could potentially live with a neutered female who will tolerate his behaviours, giving him time to learn boundaries and rules. If you are up for a team bonding exercise that is full of adventures and lots of learning along the way, the home wants to hear from you.
Luna
Luna is a six-year-old Staffie Whippet cross. Cardiff Dogs Home describes her as being "full of beans" and says that she loves to explore. The home added that she does not like to be left alone and is in need of a patient new family to help her build confidence. She was signed over to Cardiff Dogs Home as she was no longer getting along with the other dogs in her previous home.
However the home says that she has been successfully introduced to their resident dogs and that they would be willing to rehome her with another canine companion based on introductions. Luna may be able to live with older children who can be respectful of her space.
Troy
"Older gentleman" Troy is looking for a retirement home with a person or people who love food, cuddling, and the outdoors. Troy could potentially live with children aged 16 or over. He is described as always having a "smile on his face and his tail never stops wagging."
Cardiff Dogs Home said that he required vet treatment when he arrived in their care and after investigation x-rays, the home says "it was clear that it is a safer option to not remove the lump on his head as it does not bother him and he can live a happy life."
Troy' ears were left untreated for a long time, meaning he will require some extra care with daily ear clean and monitor closely for flare ups and seek vet treatment when needed. "Troy takes every thing in his stride and he is such a cuddly boy," his profile reads.
Hazley
Hazley, a nine-year-old Shar-Pei cross arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home as a stray and "had very sore skin and inflamed ears," something the home says is typical of her breed. Her coat and ears will be something that will need to be maintained throughout her life.
The home says she is a "very sweet girl and likes to be near you while on walks or in the garden." She loves to go for walks and explore new sniffing grounds. Hazley walks well on the lead, however she will need to work on socialising with other dogs.
The home adds that she does not really understand how to play with toys yet, but she will show slight interest in a squeaky toy. "In the right home She will have a life full of positive rewards and new adventures," her profile reads.
Experience of the breed is preferred when the home matches her. Since Hazley has been at Cardiff Dogs Home she has grown in confidence and is a favourite with all staff and walkers.
"We feel Hazley would prefer to be an only dog, this is due to lack of socialisation. She will require on going training to help overcome this behaviour. we feel in time she will enjoy the company of canines once she realises having friends is fun," the home says. Hazley is lover of food and could be placed with children 16 and over only.
Florence
Florence arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home as a stray and was said to be nervous of human touch. The home says she was born in 2015 and is microchipped, however her details were out of date and she has not been claimed.
She is said to have overcome her shyness and has learned to trust people again. She loves to run around the garden at the home and roll down the banks, being described as "a little whirlwind."
However, the home says that she will not tolerate being over handled "as she is still learning to accept a fuss." Flo is looking for quiet but active home and would really like a country retreat to retire in with views of the fields and quiet country walks.
The home says a busy life is not for her and that training classes will help build confidence and adjust to her new life. She could possibly be placed with older children 10 and over who will respect her space. After a foster period with another dog, the home says that Florence will be best suited in a single-dog household. Research and knowledge of the brachycephalic breed is essential.
Sherman
Two-year-old Sherman is thought to be a Boxer cross Dog De Bordeaux, and was "bewildered" when he arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home. But the home says that he is "now a happy boy who loves a fuss and enjoys going for walks." While he has settled in with his new routine, the home says that he will take time to get to know new people.
His lead training could do with some work to help him walk calmly. The home says that since he has been castrated he seems to have "a more chilled approach to life and calming attitude."
He seems to pass dogs on walks with no problems, but a continued training plan is something the home would advise to help him feel comfortable at all times. Sherman loves food and the home says that this will be a big success with his training plan.
Sherman is looking for home with a person or couple who are confident with large breeds. He will require training with boundaries in a safe and efficient manner. Positive reinforcement training will be the way forward, the home says. Sherman will need an adult only home.
Ivory
Ivory the Staffie cross is thought to be around 6-10 years old. Arriving at Cardiff Dogs Home as a stray, they say that she had been neglected and that her skin is sore and inflamed. "Even though she is not feeling 100 % Ivory has the sweetest temperament and is a happy little lady," her profile says.
Veterinary treatment was started for her as soon as she came into the care of Cardiff Dogs Home. Ivory is looking for a home with someone home most of the time who will able to bring her back and forth for vet visits at Cardiff Dog Home's onsite centre and who are able to keep up with her medical needs.
Ivory will be placed in foster with a view to adopt until she able to be signed off by the home's vet. The home feels that a dog free home is best suited to her. To support applications, Cardiff Dogs Home will require full veterinary history of any previous dogs applicants have owned.
George
George is a Jack Russell cross Pug who is around 6 years old. George has lived a happy life and he is a very special character. The home say he is full of beans and very inquisitive and enjoys his walks and exploring new sights and smells.
George will however need to work on social skills with other canines. He is a great contender for learning and is happy to be taught with tasty treats. He could potentially live with older children 6+ who are respectful of his space and able to listen carefully to parent advice.
An animal free home is best suited for him at the moment due to the on going training he will need to build bonds and learn to be comfortable around four legged friends.
Charlie
Charlie a year old and was handed to the centre when his owners where unable to keep up with his energetic ways. Charlie will need an understanding home with humans who have patience. He will need time to get to know new people and can get a little over whelmed if he feels out of his comfort zone.
He is a very happy boy once he is comfortable with people and his surroundings. He enjoys a game of fetch and running wild in our enclosed garden. He is strong when on the lead so a confident handler is a must.
Cardiff Dogs Home say a non busy home will suit Charlie best. Dalmatian experience is definitely preferred but they will consider large breed experience with Dalmatian research and knowledge. He may be able to live with a neutered canine friend.
Kenno
Kenno is a nine-year-old American Bulldog who arrived at Cardiff Dogs Home after being mistreated. He is described as generally gentle on the lead and seems to like exploring new sights and smells.
He will require a calm home with adults. He would like his own chair "to chill out on" and the home says he "won’t ask for much. He is quite an independent lad."
The home is happy to do inductions with resident dogs but feels a calm neutered female may be the best fit. Kenno can be quite vocal when playing and can sometimes come across as intimidating. The home describes him as "a large boy" and will need a confident handler.
Ragner
Ragner is an American bulldog looking for a home with someone who has a lot of experience with sharing their life with, and handling large breeds. He is around two years old and described as "the biggest puppy at heart. Once he has a bond with you, his whole body will wag when he greets you."
Ragner loves to swim and an lazing around in the sun. He is also a lover of belly rubs and leaning in for hugs. Ragner is a "large boy" but has very good lead manners. However he can get slightly over stimulated when he sees some other dogs and can become strong if he pulls.
He is described as quite sensitive and "seems to be spooked easily." Confidence building is something he needs to work on. Dog socialisation is another area he will require training in. He has missed out on some basic life skills, so a dedicated owner is a must. The home feels somewhere quiet and rural is what he needs.
Nikita
Nikita is an eight-year-old Cane Corso looking for a animal free home with someone who has very good knowledge and experience of the breed. She has the "sweetest temperament and has so much love to give," but the home says she will need help with her socialising skills.
Bandit
Bandit is an eight-year-old Malamute looking for a breed experienced home. The home says that he has "a lovely fluffy coat" that requires daily grooming and that he has a calm nature and enjoys going for gentle strolls. After placing in foster with a neutered female, the home says that he would rather be the only resident dog.
Chip
Chip is a 16-month-old Jack Russell. The home says he was signed over in December due to his guarding behaviours. He is said to become heavily attached to one person in the household and will guard them when visitors come around. Chip will need ongoing help from a behaviourist to overcome this issue and would benefit from a household with multiple adults who are all able to commit to a training plan. Once Chip understands his new routine the home believed he will settle down well, as he is still young and has plenty of capability to learn.
Chip has been on foster with a view to adopt three while in our care and has been returned for his behaviours. Therefore Cardiff Dogs Home is looking for a home with plenty of experience with the JRT breed and dogs with behavioural issues. Chip needs a lot of time and commitment from his new owners to settle into a new home and will not be perfect straight away. His new owners should be confident in being able to handle a dog with guarding behaviours and be prepared for the extra time he will need to work on his anxieties.
Chip will not be rehomed with resident or visiting children of any age or experience due to his behaviour issues. The home feels for Chip to have the best chance to overcome his nerves he will do best in a rural home without visitors and busy spaces right outside the door. Chip may benefit from living with another confident neutered dog based on introductions.
Baxter
Baxter is 18 months old and is said to make a great companion for the right home. Cardiff Dogs Home says he is extremely smart and feels a home who is able to challenge his mind with positive training games will definitely do him the world of good. Potentially doing a sport like agility would be ideal.
Baxter will require a breed experienced home, someone who has a passion for the GSD and have the time and patience to help this him learn how to be a responsible canine. The home says that he has come on so well with his socialising skills and polite manners but that he still has a long way to go and is looking for someone who is in it for the long haul.
He will require someone responsible who is willing to follow advice from staff and the Cardiff Dogs Home behaviourist. He will require help with his confidence around people, bikes and guarding things, this includes his food and toys. He can also get over-excited when playing and needs to learn what is acceptable play.
He will need to be responsibly managed and the home says that he "has so much love to give he just needs a little extra help with how to give and take in life."
Bear
Bear is an eight-year-old German Shepherd looking for a retirement home. Due to lack of socialising in younger years he does require training in this area to help him learn a much needed skill.
Described as a "sweet boy", he needs some time to feel comfortable around new people. His coat will require daily grooming and knowledge of the GSD breed is something the staff will look for in his applications.
He could potentially live with a neutered female canine of similar age. Bear has some mobility issues and is unable to go long walks, but joint supplements will help with this and he may require vet prescribed medicine in the later days of life. With monitoring his exercise levels the home found he is able to manage fine and not be in any discomfort.
Bear will not tolerate children or young active dogs and will need a calm and steady paced home. He is currently in a foster home and his fosterers have said that he sleeps through the night and is fully house trained. "He will let you know when he wants to go. He has settled into a new routine very quickly.
"Bear is very good with basic commands such as sit, give paw, wait, walk on etc waits at junctions. Is still reactive to dogs but is able to walk on, has also been a little reactive to pigeons." His fosterers have been using the treat distraction method and he seems to picking it up slowly.
His back legs struggle if he’s had a big walk and sometimes stairs seem hard for him but he generally doesn’t seem to cause any discomfort particularly when out on walks His profile says that this mostly shows when he’s trying to stand up from sitting or lying. You can read Bear's full profile here.
