An abandoned railway station is said to be haunted and has a rather sinister past.
Opened in 1910, Mayfield Railway Station in Manchester was designed as an annex for the city’s London Road Station which is now known as Manchester Piccadilly.
It was hoped that the four-platform station would reduce overcrowding in the city which was rapidly expanding.
The population of Manchester at the time was around two and half million and this had increased from around 1.8 million people in 1881.
Much like today the city was a hub of business in Victorian times as cotton mills and rows of terraced houses shot up around the region.
Located on Fairfield Street in the city centre, Mayfield Railway Station was used by services to residential suburbs in Manchester.
It would have been a hive of activity with workers travelling to and from different parts of the city for work or leisure.

However, it soon became redundant.
When the London Road station was rebuilt between 1958 and 1966 it was able to accommodate more passengers which saw fewer people using Mayfield Railway Station which eventually closed for good in 1986.
However, it seems the station was never forgotten about and over the years a number of ghostly stories emerged from the site.
It is said that a number of deaths occurred at the station which were attributed to the building being haunted years later.
There were reports of a night workman falling 50 feet to a tragic death when he opened a baggage hoist by accident while moving heavy goods.
There are also reports of two men taking their own lives at the station and their bodies being found.
Fred Jenkins was a former foreman at Mayfield Railway Station and reported hearing strange noises after the event including footsteps when nobody was around.
Other stories from those who worked on the platform describe eerie feelings and the experience of a tingling sensation in the spine in the middle of the night when the station was empty.
Even creepier, it has been said that door slamming and faint whispering has been heard around Mayfield Railway Station.
Since its closure in the 1980s, the station has become derelict adding to the scary atmosphere that is present there.
A number of redevelopment proposals have been discussed over the years but so far none have started.
There were talks of reopening Mayfield as part of an expansion of Manchester Piccadilly but nothing has ever materialised.
It has also been suggested that the land could be used for commercial or residential property.
The city is continuing to grow as an alternative for young professionals to London and more and more space for homes and flats is needed.
It seems that the site will eventually be used to create Manchester's first public park in more than 100 years as well as offices, retail units, and bars and restaurants.
There are also plans to create a 10,000 capacity venue as part of the regeneration project.
But while the future of Mayfield Railway Station may be bright, the site’s haunted past has never been forgotten.
