At its chicest, color doesn’t shout; it whispers. But when even our former go-to subtlety – butter yellow – starts to feel a little too eager to insist, ‘I’m relevant!,' the pendulum starts to swing. Lighter, quieter, and just a touch more elusive, we’re coining the next iteration ‘mellow yellow’: a barely-there wash that reads less pastel, and more like actual age.
Think aged parchment paper, early morning light, or Tallow by Farrow & Ball – closer to a cream, though part of a broader family of softly buttery tones grounded in earthy neutrals for depth. ‘That ubiquitous family of colors used so readily in the 1980s is making a little comeback but madly welcome in my opinion,’ notes the legacy paint brand, which describes the spring/summer 2026 color trend as ‘restful, discreetly elegant, and all rather superbly easy to layer with prints and texture.’
It’s a hack for conjuring sunshine where there is none. ‘They are, as we are often told, a great family of colors for those rather poorly lit or north-facing spaces, adding a little warmth to stop a space feeling too bleak and unloved.’
From Peter Dunham’s marigold-meets table linens with Hudson Grace to sneakily striped borosilicate glass by Sophie Lou Jacobsen, consider this your cue to introduce a quieter kind of sunshine with this season's least-basic shade yet.
