Okay, it might not be Mo Johnston joining Rangers back in 1989 but it's fair to say a section of the Ibrox support have reacted with a bit of shock at the prospect of Ryan Porteous moving to Govan after former Easter Road boss Jim Duffy claimed to have heard on the grapevine that the Scotland stopper could be moving across the M8 to Govan.
Record Sport understands no approach has been made for the 23-year-old who sees his future away from Leith and with the club having previously knocked back a bid of around seven-figure bid from Millwall then landing a full international on a free would represent good business.
And that news will come as a bit of a relief to many Rangers fans. But just why would a large section of the support be so against such a move? Well, it's fair to say the player has a bit of history with the Light Blues and their legions with the diehard Hibee involved in more than a few flashpoint against them in recent years. To be fair, some of it has been a bit of humour and banter like his cheeky post match Premier Sports Cup semi final interview last season when he aimed a dig at Steven Gerrard and it went viral. Still, it's unlikely it would be a popular signing and here Record Sport looks at seven reasons Porteous has become the man Rangers fans love to hate.
December 2018 - Coulibaly challenge
This was the first major incident with former Rangers loanee Lassana Coulibaly claiming the Hibs stopper could have ended his CAREER with his lunge in a 0-0 draw at Easter Road.
Porteous was booked for the horror tackle but rival bosses Steven Gerrard and Neil Lennon both admitted he was lucky to escape with just a caution.
Coulibaly went further and the Malian international said at the time: "I am very lucky because I had jumped before Porteous tackled me, but he still caught me. If my leg had been planted on the ground, then it would have been much worse and I could have been out injured because of it. These types of tackles can injure someone so badly that they don't play again."
March 2019 - Frame reaction
Porteous posed with a portrait of him goading Alfredo Morelos as the Colombian lay on the turf following a challenge. The former Scotland man had personally signed the hand-painting which was done by Hibs fan Sean Nicol.
May 2019 - Insta story
The Hibs defender made matters worse over his challenge on Lassana Coulibaly by posting a picture of it on his Instagram at the end of that season. He put the image on his picture sharing account as he celebrated being named the club's Young Player of the Year.
December 2019 - Red mist
Given his marching orders for an X-rated lunge on Borna Barisic during a match at Easter Road for which he could have no complaints. The tackle sparked a touchline rammy involving both dug-outs and it was described on social media by East Fife winger Danny Denholm as a "coward's tackle".
Steven Gerrard said: "Look, we all understand bad tackles, I've done a few myself, there's no problem with that. But you can't defend that."
September 2020 - Ger out of my face
Steven Gerrard refused to shake the Hibs defender by the hand following a 2-2 draw at Easter Road at the start of last season. Porteous was involved in a heated exchange with James Tavernier after allegedly calling him a sore loser.
Gerrard said: "Porteous was saying that Tav's a bad loser, which I think is a bit cheap coming from him. He got sent off for a really bad tackle (on Borna Barisic) when he was losing 3-0 against us here last season."
October 2021 - Aribo 'leg breaker'
Porteous was sent off again for a challenge on Joe Aribo which angered Steven Gerrard. The former Gers boss said: "I know one or two things about bad tackles because I have made a few myself - so I am not in a glass house here. It's a WILD tackle - it' a leg-breaking tackle if he catches him." The fallout was ugly, though, with boss Jack Ross revealing: "I have seen sectarian abuse, homophobic abuse, people telling him they hope he dies of a tumour."
November 2021 - Do we look happy?
Porteous couldn't resist a dig at Rangers and former boss Gerrard after Premier Sports Cup semi-final victory following his switch to Aston Villa. He was firmly in the Scotland call-up's mind after seeing off Rangers at Hampden to secure a cup final next month. When asked about his future, Gerrard brushed off questions stating: "Do I look happy? Do I look settled? Don't ask me silly questions then." When asked about the game on Premier Sports by Emma Dodds, who has issued the famous poser to Gerrard, Porteous quipped: "Do we look happy? Don't ask silly questions then."
