The $500-a-Month Backyard: Are Pools, Hot Tubs and Outdoor Kitchens Worth What They Cost?

The $500-a-Month Backyard: Are Pools, Hot Tubs and Outdoor Kitchens Worth What They Cost?
A luxurious backyard can come with significant ongoing costs, including pool chemicals, electricity, repairs and outdoor kitchen maintenance. Calculate those recurring expenses before deciding whether the upgrade fits the household budget – Shutterstock

A backyard can look like the ultimate escape until the escape starts sending monthly invoices. A swimming pool, hot tub, outdoor kitchen or some combination of the three can turn an ordinary patch of grass into a vacation-style hangout, but those features come with ongoing costs that go far beyond the initial installation.

That matters because the biggest mistake homeowners make involves treating the purchase price as the whole story. Water needs treatment, pumps need electricity, equipment needs maintenance, surfaces need cleaning and outdoor appliances eventually need attention too. A backyard can deliver years of fun, but it can also quietly become a recurring expense that feels a lot like a subscription nobody remembers signing up for.
