The 2 Johnnies have released a brand new tune, filled to the brim with Irishness.
Titled ‘The Streets Of San Francisco’, the track is the 11th single from comedy duo and popular podcast hosts.
Quite possibly the most Irish song you will ever hear, the track is full of local sayings and - in true The 2 Johnnies style – a nod to Ireland’s obsession with the chicken fillet roll.
Written during lockdown, the new RTE 2fm presenters penned the tune after seeing so many friends and Irish people stranded abroad, unable to return home to see their family.
Commenting on the new release, Johnny B said: “We’re so happy with it and can’t wait for people to hear it and of course we’ll be playing it live at The 3 Arena in April.
“The 2 Johnnies’ songs have always been played at pre-drinks and house parties, this one is going to be a banger for your bluetooth speaker.”
The tune features a compilation of Irish sayings and phrases, well known in households and pubs nationwide.
The colloquial tune is also loaded with references of the nation’s love of chicken fillet rolls, curry chips, Ireland’s obsession with ‘the deaths’ as well as famous myths and superstitions such as the fear of the banshee and saluting magpies.
Written for those living abroad who were unable to travel home during the pandemic, the chorus goes: “The streets of San Francisco still don’t feel like home
“And I’m teaching the dog to speak Irish
“Watching a game on the phone
“I’m drinking on Sundays to rebel songs
“I can’t get a good chicken roll
“The streets of San Francisco
“Still don’t feel like home
“One for the road.”
It comes as the pair get set to return to their RTE 2fm show on Monday after they were taken off air following an investigation by bosses into ‘a social media breach’ that saw them accused of ‘sexist content’.
The station’s newest presenters known to fans as Johnny Smacks and Johnny B, found themselves in the centre of controversy last week after they were accused of airing ‘sexist and insulting comments’ in their Spotify podcast, and in clips used on their social media platforms to promote their new 2fm radio show.
The pair apologised for any upset caused, but after huge public backlash, RTE announced the duo would remain off air pending ‘a review of the matter’ - just three days after kicking off their brand new 2FM show ‘Drive it with The 2 Johnnies’.
In a statement, RTÉ said they have concluded their investigation after engaging ‘intensively’ with The 2 Johnnies in respect of the breaches of and confirmed that the comedy duo, real names John O'Brien and John McMahon, will return to air next Monday.
