It was a comfortable win for Rangers but 90 minutes rarely pass without incident in the VAR era of Scottish football, do they?
First half goals from Connor Goldson and Fashion Sakala and a penalty from James Tavernier had Michael Beale's team in control at the break and despite Jeriel Dorsett pulling one back after the interval, it wasn't enough to spark a comeback. But Killie boss McInnes was left fuming his side weren't awarded a penalty for a foul by Allan McGregor on Rory MacKenzie that could have turned the game on its head if it was given.
The raging Killie boss said: "We should get a penalty for that when Rory is brought down by Allan McGregor. It’s bizarre we don’t get a penalty. We get a goal and I thought we were far better in the second half but I said before the game, it’s a 90 minute performance you need at Ibrox."
The Killie boss did admit that the decision to award Rangers a penalty in the first half, while confusing at first sight, appeared to be right enough on a replay. But was it? And is he right to feel aggrieved by his side's spot-kick snub? Let's dive into it.
Kilmarnock penalty snub
McInnes pulled no punches in his assessment of the incident as Allan McGregor tangled with Rory McKenzie and brought the winger down after he'd punched the ball out for a corner. The veteran Ibrox stopper was off balance as he stumbled into the back of the Killie man who was incensed that it was missed.
This one didn't even go to VAR and nothing was given but the pundits were almost unanimous it should have been given. Well, almost unanimous, as Richard Foster gave his theory that McGregor should be absolved of blame as he'd won the initial challenge before contact was made.
He said: "I'm going to disagree with everyone, I thought McGregor punched the ball out for a corner and then collided with the Kilmarnock player. I think it was a corner, I think it was the right decision.
"McGregor clears the ball and then there's contact. It's essentially a tackle that he's won."
Fellow pundit Leanne Crichton though felt that as the ball was still in play when the contact was made, it should have been a spot-kick. We're leaning towards the majority verdict on this one.
Rangers penalty
A ball over the top from James Tavernier on the brink of half-time had Ryan Alebiosu in all sorts of trouble and the on-loan Arsenal defender was scrambling to stop Ryan Kent. As the defender nudged into Kent's back, Antonio Colak was up in arms claiming he had handled it - but on-pitch whistler Collum didn't see it.
However VAR David Munro did spot it and called Collum over for a check. After watching it from a few angles it still wasn't abundantly clear given the pace on the ball as it bounces up. But the angle facing the incident from goal side shows it does strike his hand and Collum didn't take long to point to the spot.
It's a harsh one on the defender but it comes from an error as he misjudges the flight of the ball. And it does strike him in the arm, with McInnes himself admitting it the correct call after the VAR review.
