The 1975's Matt Healy speaks out on his Rage Against The Machine dig at Leeds Festival 2022

The 1975 frontman Matt Healy has finally addressed those controversial comments he made at Leeds Festival earlier this year.

As you might recall, The 1975 were last minute replacements for Rage Against The Machine at Bramham Park for Leeds Festival 2022. The rock legends couldn’t play because of an injury to frontman Zack de la Rocha.

There was some people who weren’t happy with The 1975 being booked. On stage, lead singer Matt Healy addressed this.

He said: "Seventeen of the past 20 years I have been stood here with you guys so this means so f******* much to me that you guys are here right now.

"And I'm sorry we're not Rage Against The Machine but who's Rage Against The Machine?" This question prompted some boos from the crowd, before Matt added: "I mean give it up for the greatest rock band of the previous generation, ladies and gentlemen please.

"Being literally in Rage Against The Machine and having a gammy leg is quite funny though. We're The 1975 so we're just going to be The 1975 as much as we can. We weren't even supposed to do this we were going to come on tour and see you guys and do specific stuff but we thought 'f*** it, we'll do a greatest hits set to start out our campaign'."

Now the dust has settled, Matt has clarified how his remarks were intended. As the NME reports, Matt said: “I watched it back and I was like, ‘that delivery was so bad’. There are no records that me and George (Daniel, drummer) know more than Rage. Even Renegades.

“We f**king love Rage so much. I think I was so conflicted by how weird it was for me to even accept putting myself in the same league as them that I couldn’t even get my words out right.”

Healy then added: ”If I’d have slagged Rage off then I would have leaned into it and had a bit ready. I’m not scared of doing that.”
