The 19 richest people in the Midlands who are worth a combined £34 billion

Nineteen Midlands-based business tycoons worth more than a combined £34 billion have been named among the richest people in the UK.

Some of the region's best-known business people - from firms including bet365, JCB, Sports Direct and Bloor Homes - appear in The Sunday Times Rich List 2022.

The rich list is an annual index which ranks the country's 250 wealthiest residents. Here we take a look at the entries from the Midlands.

The rankings:

17th place - The Coates family - who own online gambling company bet365 and Stoke City Football Club - top the list of the richest people in the West Midlands, but come in 17th place overall. Together, Denise, John and Peter Coates are worth a huge £8.637 billion which is £189 million higher than 2021.

42nd place - JCB chairman Lord Anthony Bamford - whose father founded the Staffordshire digger-maker in 1945 - is the second richest person in the West Midlands. This is despite seeing his family fortune fall by £275 million in 2022 to £4.32 billion.

59th place - With a fortune of £2.995 billion, House of Fraser and Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley is the wealthiest person in the East Midlands - and 59th place overall. The 57-year-old has seen his personal fortune rise by £277 million in the past year.

70th place - Anglo-French entrepreneur Jacques Gaston 'Tony' Murray and his family owns Wolverhampton-based Andrew Sykes Group, which hires heating and air conditioning equipment, and Leeds-based fire protection business London Security. At 102, he's the oldest person in the Rich List, and has a wealth of £2.5 billion. This is £230 million more than in 2021.

85th place - The only multi-billionaire with Leicestershire links in this year's list is John Bloor, the man behind Bloor Homes and the owner of the Triumph motorbike factory near Hinckley. He is the 85th richest person in the UK with £2.079 billion worth of assets - an increase of £804 million a year ago. That's the equivalent of earning nearly £92,000 every hour - or about £1,530 every minute.

103rd place - Sir Will Adderley, whose parents Bill and Jean founded Dunelm on a Leicester market stall in 1979, is ranked in 103rd place with a family fortune of £1.78 billion. This is down £9 million on last year where they were ranked in 92nd place.

115th place - Stoke-on-Trent born philanthropist and Phones 4u founder John Caudwell is even richer than he was last year after seeing his fortune increase by £14 million to £1.5 billion this year. This makes him the fourth richest person in the West Midlands and 115th in the UK.

130th place - Engineering tycoon Tony Langley - who started in business in 1975 aged just 20 - has seen his fortune rise by a huge £560 million in 2022, taking his overall fortune to £1.35 billion. He is ranked in 130th place which is up 74 places on last year.

183rd place - Caspar MacDonald Hall's Kingswinford-based London & Cambridge Properties has become one of the most active players on the Midlands property scene, owning, investing in and managing a host of commercial developments across the region and elsewhere. 185th place - Roy Richardson and his family are involved in a variety of investment and property projects but they are most famous for developing the Merry Hill shopping centre in Dudley in the 1980s which continues to be a major retail and economic hub for West Midlands to this day.
