The £104m benefit of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium revealed as Spurs financial results announced

Tottenham saw a total revenue increase of 22.7% for the financial year of 2022 after earning £444million in total. Spurs saw a jump of £82.1million over the 12-month period after the previous financial year had totalled £361.9million due to the Covid pandemic.

The most notable increase unsurprisingly came in terms of match receipts as their financial results for the year ending June 2021 only brought in £1.9million with all but two home games (Arsenal 2,000 fans and Aston Villa 10,000 fans) played behind closed doors in the 2020/21 season. Following the green light to operate at full capacity once again in 2021/22, which was in fact the club's first full season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a capacity crowd, the club saw their match receipts rise £104.2million on the previous year to a total of £106.1million.

One area that Tottenham did see a decrease in was their UEFA prize money after going from £23.6million in 2021 to £10.2million in 2022. Competing in the newly-formed Europa Conference League as opposed to the Europa League in 2020/21, a Covid-enforced group stage exit also had a big impact on the club's earnings as they were not involved in the knockout phase of the competition.

TV and media revenue was also down on the previous 12 months after earning £144.2million in 2022 compared to £184.4million in 2021. This was due to a number of games and related TV and media revenues from 2020 being played out and accounted for in 2021.

One area that Tottenham did see a notable 20.7% increase was their commercial revenues as their 2022 total of £183.5million was up £31.5million compared to £152million in 2021. A major factor in this was due to new sponsors, club stores being open, growth of eCommerce and the start of new major events being hosted at the stadium throughout the year.

The club's operating expenses (before football trading) increased 18.7% to £403.4million (2021: £339.8million) due to increased first team costs and the return to full matchday operations and the profit from operations, before depreciation, amortisation, player trading, interest and taxation increased 15.7% to £112.3million from £97.1million.

The loss for the year after depreciation, amortisation, player trading, interest and taxation was £50.1million, down from £83.8million the previous year.

Following a big increase in match receipts and commercial in 2022, the numbers could continue to rise over the next 12 months. Tottenham will certainly see a dramatic increase in UEFA prize money from their total of £10.2million in 2022 as they successfully navigated their way through the Champions League group stage to set up a Round of 16 showdown against AC Milan.
