The 10 counties in Wales where Covid numbers are actually growing

Of the 22 local authorities in Wales 10 have seen an increase in their coronavirus infection rates over the last seven days.

With the reduction in people taking PCR tests it is hard to compare these numbers to what we were seeing before Christmas. However, week to week they can still provide an indication of the level of Covid in Wales.

These figures are seven-day rolling totals for new cases adjusted for population (per 100,000 people). It is important to remember that though these figures are a useful guide they are just part of the story. If testing massively increases in one place there is likely to be a rise in confirmed cases. However these figures are still a vital factor in Welsh Government and Public Health Wales decision-making.

The latest seven-day infection rate across Wales, based on the cases for every 100,000 people (for the seven days up to February 28) now stands at 156 – a slight fall from 159 the week before.

It should be remembered that this doesn't mean that new restrictions are coming in. Just last Friday, First Minister Mark Drakeford announced the time table for lifting every Covid rule remaining in Wales. You can read more about this here.

Gwynedd

The largest rise in Covid cases has been seen in Gwynedd. A big part of this may be the fact that last week it had the lowest case rates in Wales. It remains below the Welsh average despite a near 30% rise.

Newport

This area has seen just under a 10% increase in cases in the last week. It is still below the Welsh average despite this.

Rhondda Cynon Taf

RCT has seen an increase of 9% in seven days. Though RCT has had historically very high rates of Covid it remains below the average in Wales.

Vale of Glamorgan

The Vale has the highest Covid rates in Wales at the moment with over 200 cases per 100%. Cases there have risen over 7% in a week.

Neath Port Talbot

A rise of just over 7% has seen NPT Covid rates tip above the Welsh average.

This table shows the growth rates in every local authority:
