Final Fantasy’s 35th anniversary extravaganza went down over the weekend, revealing what fan-favorite entries in the series are.
Before the event, Square Enix put up a Japanese poll asking fans to rank every mainline Final Fantasy from worst to best – then revealed the results during a 35th anniversary livestream (thanks, Resetera).
The 10 best Final Fantasy games, according to fan votes
- Final Fantasy XIV Online
- Final Fantasy VII
- Final Fantasy X
- Final Fantasy VI
- Final Fantasy IX
- Final Fantasy V
- Final Fantasy VIII
- Final Fantasy IV
- Final Fantasy XI Online
- Final Fantasy XV
Remember that there are 15 core entries in the Final Fantasy series thus far, so making it on this list is quite a feat. Pixel remasters of Final Fantasy 4, Final Fantasy 6, and more are heading to Nintendo Switch and PS4 in the spring of next year, for those of you who missed out on those classics.
No real surprise Final Fantasy 14 took top honors, given its staggering popularity. The MMORPG also won “Best Ongoing Game” at the 2022 Game Awards – a category it won in 2021 as well.
Obviously, this poll didn’t include Final Fantasy 16 since it isn’t out yet – though the summer 2023 launch date isn’t too far off. Square Enix is already taking pre-orders for Final Fantasy 16‘s expensive collector’s edition, which costs more than an Xbox Series S! In fairness, it does look incredibly cool.
