Jeremy Clarkson faced a backlash on Instagram after posting a photo of England flags in a bin following their Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain.
Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions were aiming for their first international trophy in 60 years but lost 2-1 to Spain in Berlin on Sunday night.
Leading up to the match, many celebrities showed strong support for the England team.
But soon after their defeat, the Clarkson’s Farm star shared a picture of a bin filled with England flags and Union Jacks, without a caption.
While some fans related to his frustration, many criticised his post, with one social media user writing: “No one should treat their country flags like this.
“If you are sad at a loss, its human to be sad. But never disgrace your homeland.”
“That’s so disrespectful,” another commented.
While a third remarked: “Honestly. Finishing second in a Euro championship is pretty amazing.”
While the 64-year-old shared his disappointment after the result, many celebs showed their support for the Three Lions in defeat.
The Prince of Wales told England’s football team “we’re all still so proud of you”.
William, who attended the match in Berlin alongside his son Prince George, said on social media: “This time it just wasn’t meant to be. We’re all still so proud of you. Onwards. W”
Meanwhile, Nigella Lawson penned on X, formerly Twitter: “Right. OK. That’s it, then Thank you boys for doing your best for us.”
Alongside photos of her watching the game, Scarlett Moffatt wrote on Instagram: “It might not have come home, but thanks for the memories lads @england so so proud.”
A number of celebrities were spotted cheering England on from at the Olympiastadion in Berlin - Harry Style, James Corden, Ed Sheeran and his wife Cherry Seaborn, Roman and Martin Kemp, F1 driver George Russell, actor Damian Lewis and Louis Tomlinson.
