‘That link doesn’t work’: Woman books AirBnb for her bachelorette weekend. Then her friend tries to view the house

A woman booked an Airbnb for a bachelorette trip. But nobody could have expected what happened next.

In a viral TikTok, user Meghan (@meghan_mc5) started by explaining that, in January, she booked an Airbnb for a bachelorette trip in August because it was an in-demand location. The process went smoothly, with the host responding fast, thanking her for booking, and giving her the address.

However, when her friend recently messaged her asking for the Airbnb link, the friend informed her that the listing link didn’t work. This made Meghan skeptical, so she sent the host a message to see if she would respond, but she didn’t. So, Meghan messaged a second time, asking where she was and noting that the listing wasn’t active anymore. To get answers, Meghan then reverse-image searched a picture of the living room, and was shocked to discover the property was listed as an active real estate sale, and had been since February.

Following this discovery, Meghan contacted Airbnb customer service, who said that they would message the host. When she got back in touch, the customer service rep revealed that while the host didn’t reply, there was an open case regarding a ‘personal emergency’ in relation to the host. So, the TikToker did some more digging.

Looking at the Airbnb reviews, she remarked how the most recent one detailed a strong smell described as being something like a dead animal. While people came over and said there wasn’t a smell, the group decided to relocate. The house was put up for sale soon after this.

The clip amassed 49,400 views.

What did commenters think?

Mostly, commenters couldn’t contain their curiosity. “I’m so with you on this,” one wrote. “We need to know what happened.”

“You need to continue your investigation,” a second added. While a third admitted, “I was so sat for this.”

A fourth begged: “I need to know more!” And a fifth echoed: “I care please update can’t wait.”

The TikToker made a follow-up

Fortunately for the commenters, Meghan soon made a follow-up video. In the clip, she revealed that her friend sent her the obituary of someone who appeared to be the Airbnb host.

“I think this is an original experience for everyone involved because my Airbnb host straight up died,” she said.

The staff member Meghan spoke to before confirmed this news, while her friend also found an article about a person who passed away from a car accident with the same name and death date as the Airbnb host.

Still, Meghan revealed that she got a refund.

“This was completely off of vibes alone…” she concluded. “I will never doubt my intuition again.”

What happens when an Airbnb host dies?

According to SimplyTrust, there is no specific Airbnb policy on what to do if a host dies. Instead, the blog says that deaths are dealt with on a case-by-case basis through Airbnb’s customer support team in conversation with the host’s estate.

It also notes that there are certain “urgent concerns” to address in that situation, like the management of active reservations, pending payouts, and live listings, which can be transferred or removed based on the estate’s wishes.

Meghan didn’t immediately respond to The Mary Sue’s request for comment via TikTok direct message. Airbnb didn’t immediately respond to The Mary Sue’s request for comment via email.
