That cameo in Daredevil: Born Again may have just been confirmed, but one fan theory perfectly justifies it

What If...?.

After fans spotted a potential major cameo in the latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel's TV boss has seemingly confirmed that the Watcher made an appearance in season 2, episode 4 – and there's a perfect theory to explain why he was present.

"Always watching…" Brad Winderbaum wrote on Instagram alongside a screenshot of the scene, which saw a broken window and fluorescent lights in Fogwell's Gym combine to look suspiciously like Jeffrey Wright's omniscient What If…? character. The moment came just after Daredevil intervened and tried to stop Bullseye attacking Wilson Fisk and his wife Vanessa after Fisk's big boxing match.

Despite Fisk's (and Daredevil's) best efforts, Bullseye succeeded in injuring Vanessa pretty badly and, although her ultimate fate is still up in the air until next week, it's not looking good for New York's First Lady – which could be why the Watcher wants to make it his business.

"The last time Kingpin lost Vanessa he tore a hole through the multiverse. This is why The Watcher appears on Daredevil: Born Again S2 Ep4," a fan account wrote on Twitter.

In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, an animated version of Kingpin lost his wife and son after they witnessed one of his battles with Spider-Man and Vanessa crashed her car, killing them both. Fisk blamed Spidey for their deaths, and set about tearing down the multiverse to find another version of his wife and child in another universe. As the Watcher concerns himself with all the branching timelines of the multiverse, it makes sense that he'd want to keep an eye on this situation.
