Thames streets and pubs in central London placed on flood alert amid high tides

Streets and pubs in central London have been placed under flood alerts as high spring tides could cause the River Thames to burst its banks.

Londoners have been told to prepare for flooding along the river stretching from the Thames Barrier through to west London.

The Environment Agency (EA) has warned famous areas of the city including the riverfront next to Greenwich’s Royal Naval College and part of Southbank close to the Tate Modern could flood.

There are also warnings about potential flooding at the Mayflower and Angel pubs in Rotherhithe, but no properties are expected to be flooded.

The high tide is expected to reach 4.55m above average sea level at London Bridge at around 3.15pm on Tuesday.

Flooding of low-lying roads and footpaths is expected for one to two hours on either side of high tide.

The EA has also told west Londoners to be prepared for possible flooding along the river, including at Putney Embankment, Chiswick Mall, and the riverside at Twickenham.

Another flood alert has also been issued across south London following recent storms and heavy rainfall.

There could be groundwater flooding across areas such as South Croydon, Bromley, Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham.

Last month cars were left trapped during high tides at Twickenham and in January Hackney Wick residents and businesses faced knee-deep water after torrential rain caused the canal flooding.

The nearby River Lea canal burst its banks after heavy rain, with the London Fire Brigade sending 70 firefighters and 10 engines to the west side of the river.

Residents at around 100 affected properties on Dace Road, Wick Lane and Smeed Road were bailing out water by the bucket-load.
