A Texas man, aged 23, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of his 21-year-old newlywed wife. The sentencing was handed down by Judge Gary Chaney following a plea agreement. The victim, Anggy Diaz, was found with her head severed and left in the shower in 2023.
During the pre-trial phase, concerns were raised about the defendant's mental health, but he was deemed competent to stand trial after an examination. As part of the plea deal, the man waived his right to appeal the verdict, sentence, and any potential defense, including an insanity plea.
The Waller County District Attorney's Office, in consultation with Diaz's family, finalized the plea deal and sentencing. The District Attorney emphasized that domestic violence will not be tolerated in Waller County and that justice will be sought for victims.
Diaz, originally from Nicaragua, had been in the care of an aunt upon arriving in the U.S. She was found murdered in the couple's bedroom, with evidence pointing to a kitchen knife as the murder weapon. The perpetrator confessed to the crime after Diaz's tragic death.
Waller County Sheriff Troy Guidry confirmed that all parts and pieces related to the crime were recovered. The defendant's earliest parole date is set for 2043, and he will not be eligible for release before then.
