A Texas physician and a retired U.S. Postal Service employee have been charged with conspiring to defraud the program that pays medical and wage benefits to federal employees hurt on the job, federal prosecutors in Dallas announced Oct. 23. A federal grand jury returned a superseding indictment on Oct. 7 charging Dr. Javaria Jabeen and Allendor Kenyon Brown with conspiracy to commit health care fraud. Prosecutors allege that about $19 million in fraudulent claims led to at least $17 million in payments.
The charges are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Both were arrested and made initial court appearances Oct. 14. If convicted, each faces up to 10 years in federal prison.
