Texas Czech festival marks 50 years as couples return with children, grandchildren

In the small city of West, Texas, a annual celebration of Czech heritage began in 1976 as a modest fundraiser to support the local community. What started as a single day of polka music, kolaches and a hometown parade has grown over five decades into one of the state’s most beloved cultural festivals. In 2026, the year of Westfest’s 50th anniversary, couples who had been married during the first year of the festival returned to march in the parade, now as grandparents, surrounded by their children and grandchildren. As KWBU reported , the milestone highlighted how a community event rooted in immigrant traditions can become a multigenerational touchstone, uniting families and neighbors over the span of half a century. A small town with deep Czech roots West, Texas, is located on Interstate 35 between Dallas and Austin, a place where the smell of baking kolaches often welcomes visitors before they even cross the town limits . The area was settled in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Czech and Slovak immigrants who arrived in search of land and opportunity .They brought with them their language, Catholic faith, folk music, dance and recipes that would become defining features of the community.
