Texas AG Paxton Launches Purge Campaign Against GOP Opponents

Following his recent acquittal from impeachment charges, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has embarked on a bold mission to target numerous members of his own party in the upcoming primaries. Paxton's primary targets include legislators, state judges, and even Republican House Speaker Dade Phelan, who played a pivotal role in Paxton's impeachment last year.

This internal strife within the Texas GOP has escalated into a fierce battle, characterized by personal attacks and political vendettas. Paxton's efforts, although he is not on the ballot himself, could significantly impact the future direction of the deeply conservative Texas Legislature, potentially shifting it further to the right.

Paxton has set his sights on over 30 Republican incumbents facing primary challenges, as well as three female Republican judges on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. These judges had previously limited the powers of Paxton's office in a 2021 ruling, prompting his retaliatory actions.

Despite his aggressive political maneuvers, Paxton continues to face legal challenges, including felony security fraud charges that could result in a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. Additionally, he is under scrutiny in a federal criminal investigation related to similar allegations.

The clash between Paxton and other prominent Republicans, such as Governor Greg Abbott, has intensified the primary season in Texas. Abbott, with his own list of targeted GOP House members, is at odds with Paxton's endorsements and support for challengers.

One of Paxton's main objectives is to unseat House Speaker Dade Phelan, with whom he has engaged in a bitter feud since the impeachment proceedings. Phelan's tenure as speaker has been marked by conservative victories, but his role in Paxton's impeachment has fueled animosity between the two.

Furthermore, Paxton's campaign against the judges on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals is linked to their previous ruling that curtailed his prosecutorial authority in cases of voter fraud. This issue aligns Paxton with former President Donald Trump, whom he supported in challenging the 2020 election results.

As the primary elections approach, the political landscape in Texas remains tumultuous, with Paxton's aggressive tactics threatening to reshape the state's Republican Party. The outcome of these primaries could have far-reaching implications for the future of Texas politics.
