Texans QB Davis Mills says he feels ‘comfortable’ in late game situations

The Houston Texans have had moments to win ball games with drives late in the past two weeks, but have failed to do so, which has been a key part of their 0-1-1 record.

Against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1 at NRG Stadium, Houston had three drives to get the win and barely got past midfield on only one of those drives, resulting in a 20-20 tie.

In Week 2 at the Denver Broncos, the Texans went four-and-out on a potential game-tying drive.

Quarterback Davis Mills doesn’t believe that it is a case of nerves, which would be a reasonable conclusion given he has started in just 13 games of his 15-game career.

“I’m comfortable in those situations,” Mills told reporters after practice Wednesday. “Just got to execute my job. Looking back on it, there’s opportunities down the field. Got to execute with those. Missed a couple throws this last game, but then if they cover up, like I said before, we’ve got to be able to get our checkdowns the ball and let them make plays and move the ball that way.”

Even though the Texans haven’t achieved their first full win of the season, Mills can see evidence on tape of possible success, pending the offense executes in such late parts of the game.

“Just seeing that on film and reflecting on it, I think we’re in a really good spot right now,” said Mills. “Those fourth quarter moments late in the game when we’ve got to go down and do something. Those are the make or break between a good team and a bad team. I think our team is really optimistic about where we’re at and we’re ready to go and prove it this weekend.”

The Texans have a chance to show their mettle in late game situations when they take on the 1-1 Chicago Bears Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at Soldier Field.
