The Houston Texans offensive coaching staff remains a hot talent pool this offseason. While offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik interviewed for open head coaching positions, quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson interviewed for a third OC role – this time with the Philadelphia Eagles, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Johnson, who played a pivotal role in rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud’s rise this year, also interviewed for the New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns open offensive coordinator positions.
An ex-quarterback himself with some NFL experience, the 35-year-old Johnson joined DeMeco Ryans this year after as season as the Minnesota Vikings assistant quarterbacks coach and three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. Johnson coached with Ryans with the San Francisco 49ers for one season in 2017 as a Bill Walsh Diversity coaching fellowship.
Johnson also has a connection to Philadelphia, as the Eagles signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He was waived before the season, though.
The Texans are in a tenuous position with their offensive staff, as Johnson would be the likely offensive coordinator replacement for Slowik if he left for a head coaching job. But if Slowik stays, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Johnson leave for another team.
This is the price of success in the NFL, and Ryans is learning what hiring a good staff entails after just one season as a head coach.
