The Houston Texans and Bryce Young are as linked together as sand and car floorboards after visiting Galveston.
It isn’t a surprise to anyone that ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay projected the Texans to take the Alabama signal caller with the No. 1 overall pick in his mock for the 2023 NFL draft.
McShay’s mock presents an interest notion with the No. 12 overall pick, which Houston obtained via trade in the offseason with the Cleveland Browns.
While it can be argued Houston could use a younger pass rusher or add more firepower to their receiving corps, McShay has the Texans taking Notre Dame tight end Michael Myer with their second Round 1 selection.
We got Houston a quarterback atop the board, so how about a security blanket target for Bryce Young here in the middle of the first round? Mayer is a big target with a wide catch radius and the strength to run over defenders after the catch. And after back-to-back seasons with 800-plus receiving yards and seven or more TD catches, he might be the safest prospect in the class. He’d be a reliable pass-catcher, a go-to option in the red zone and an effective in-line blocker for the Texans. Pretty solid Thursday night for GM Nick Caserio.
Taking Myer would assuredly put former 2021 fifth-round tight end Brevin Jordan on notice. The Miami product has started in two of his seven games active in 2022.
The move would also signal the Texans still weren’t too committed to Jordan Akins, who seems to have found more comfort in Houston’s offense than he did in previous seasons. Akins has caught 25 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns through 11 games with Houston, two of which he has started.
Taking Myer in Round 1 would also be a first in Texans history as they have never used a first-round draft choice on a tight end.
