Texans go with Texas WR Xavier Worthy in Draft Wire 2-round mock

One area where the Houston Texans could stand to keep getting younger and more talented is receiver.

Although the Texans seem to have found their top two targets in 2023 with Nico Collins and Robert Woods, there are long-term questions surrounding the duo. How much high level production does Woods, 31, still have left? While Collins flashes dominance, is it consistent enough to justify a second contract when his deal expires at the end of 2024?

The Texans can solve the problem with a first-round wideout, which is precisely what Curt Popejoy has them doing in the latest two-round mock from the Draft Wire. Using the Cleveland Browns’ first-rounder at No. 17 overall — obtained via 2022 offseason trade — the Texans pick Texas receiver Xavier Worthy.

Adding the Fresno Central East High School alumnus to the corps would overcrowd it in the beginning. However, getting a look at what Woods had to offer throughout offseason workouts and the trajectory of Collins to that point would give the Texans an idea of whether to use a pick on Worthy, who would join a young crop that included Tank Dell and John Metchie.

With the Texans’ proprietary second-round pick at No. 34 overall, Houston takes Clemson linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, son of the former Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Washington All-Pro linebacker. The Texans’ linebacking corps is stacked enough as is with Christian Harris, Henry To’oTo’o, and Denzel Perryman. If Houston were to add another linebacker that early in the draft, it would be to foment competition.
