John Metchie was robbed in 2022.
The Houston Texans’ second-round receiver missed his rookie year battling leukemia. Although the Alabama product had to set football aside to take on a more consequential battle, there was hope Metchie would beat the disease and step foot onto the playing field.
According to coach DeMeco Ryans, who met with reporters at NRG Stadium, the 5-11, 187-pound wideout should be well enough to participate in the club’s offseason program.
“Yeah, John is doing fine,” Ryans said. “We’ll see John get involved with our offseason program. And with John, as with every other player, we’re going to take it one day at a time and see where he can grow and where he can be when the time comes. At the right time, when the season comes, we’ll see where he is.”
Before the cancer diagnosis, Metchie was working through a torn ACL that kept him out of the College Football Playoffs. The injury, which occurred in early December during the 2021 SEC Championship Game, would have had some effects as Metchie sought a smooth start to the regular season with no time missed.
