Texans’ Davis Mills is among group of quarterbacks expected to improve in 2022

The Houston Texans are counting on Davis Mills to take the next step in 2022.

If Mills is able to show improvement under center, it helps the personnel and scouting department solve the quarterback issue as general manager Nick Caserio continues to build the roster. If Houston doesn’t have to use any of their twin-first round picks over the next two drafts to take a quarterback, it will help plug roster holes quickly.

According to Connor McQuiston from Pro Football Focus, Mills made it on their top-10 list of quarterbacks who are expected to improve this upcoming season.

Mills is in the same bucket as the other two 2021 rookies on this list, but he has a slightly more optimistic outlook. While this is somewhat because he produced marginally better in 2021, it’s primarily due to the projected trio of Brandin CooksNico Collins and Chris Conley looking stronger in the model than what is available to Fields and Wilson.

Caserio told “Payne & Pendergast” on Sports Radio 610 [KILT-AM] on June 16 that one of the areas where Mills has improved over the offseason is his understanding of the offense.

“I would say his understanding offensively of what we’re doing, the terminology,” Caserio said. “There’s been some things that we’ve tweaked relative to how we call plays, whether it’s formations, whether it’s route concepts, whatever it might be. So, he’s comfortable with that, and then I would say overall for the most part this spring the decision making has been good relative to taking care of the football.”

Mills may not close the gap in one season to show the organization he is one of the top-3 signal callers in the conference, but he may be able to show the Texans the trend is upward at quarterback and to let him have another season as the field general of Pep Hamilton’s offense.
