Strictly Come Dancing: Vicky Pattison stunned by special message as Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly thank fans after exit

Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly hosted tonight’s episode of Strictly Come Dancing, after announcing that they will be leaving the show at the end of this series.

The pair broke the news on Thursday as they shared a video statement on Instagram and addressed their decision at the start of Saturday night’s show.

Winkleman said: “We want to thank you for your beautiful messages. We've got another eight weeks but it's not about us. It's about this incredible show and a Strictly champion to crown.”

“We cannot wait to spend the rest of the series with you, our incredible couples and these four,” Daly added, as she introduced the judges.

Week five’s live show saw the 11 remaining couples take part in Icons Week, paying tribute to their favourite stars from the music world.

Vicky Pattison transformed into a fellow Geordie for her Couple’s Choice routine set to Cheryl’s “Fight For This Love” - and the Girls Aloud star sent in a special video message to mark the occasion.

Pattison wasn’t the only celebrity to receive support from her chosen icon either, as Ellie Goldstein was congratulated on her efforts by Spice Girl Emma Bunton.

Elsewhere in the episode, Balvinder Sopal bounced back from being in the dance-off again with a Beyonce-themed quickstep and La Voix closed the show with a tribute to Cher.

BBC bosses respond to Tess and Claudia's departure

Friday 24 October 2025 01:25 , Athena Stavrou

Kate Phillips, chief content officer for the BBC, described the announcement as the “end of an era”, with the co-hosts being “integral” to the show’s success.

She said: “They’ve both been such incredible hosts at the very heart of the show, their passion and dedication has gone above and beyond. They’ve been integral to Strictly’s success over the last 20 years, but I understand why they’ve decided it’s time to hang up the glitter ball and get their weekends back.”

Suzy Lamb, managing director of entertainment at BBC Studios, added: “Tess brought elegance, poise, and a genuine love for the show that never waned from the very start. And with Claudia’s charm and razor-sharp wit joining us from It Takes Two in 2014, it cemented a partnership that has kept our audience captivated ever since.

“Tess and Claudia are much more than presenters to us, they are part of the Strictly production family – and whilst we’ll miss them dearly, we wish them nothing but the best.”

The show’s executive producer, Sarah James, labelled the pair as the “matriarchs” of the Strictly family, adding they are the “best duo of presenters” in the business.

She said: “They have championed countless celebrities on the dancefloor, led us all through two series during the pandemic, but more importantly they have a deep and genuine bond with the show and every single member of the team.

“We have been together and supported each other for a long time – through pregnancies, births and deaths – and to say we will all miss them terribly is an understatement.”

Friday 24 October 2025 09:30 , Greg Evans

Anton Du Beke has dubbed Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman’s exit from the programme “the saddest news”.

“Tess, I remember back in 2004 in a London hotel introducing this wonderful new show Strictly Come Dancing to the world. You’ve been a torch bearer from the beginning.”

He continued: “But more importantly for those 20 years, you’ve been a wonderful friend and colleague. I’m going to miss you dearly on a Saturday night.

“Hand in hand with the fabulous Claudia, taking over from my hero Brucie, together you have elevated the show to unprecedented levels as the most magnificent presenting duo!”

The shock news that Daly and Winkleman are leaving Strictly after more than a decade has naturally got people wondering when their final episode will be.

Strictly Come Dancing judge Motsi Mabuse has admitted she was “shocked” by the “totally unexpected” news of Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman’s departure.

The panellist, who joined the show in 2019, joked that she “never hear[s] the rumblings” about colleagues’ departures, and admitted that she “really needed a moment to let it sink in”.

Mabuse, who is the older sister of former Strictly pro and two-time show winner Oti Mabuse, said that Winkleman and Daly’s joint departure “feels like a very special era coming to a close” in a post on Instagram.

The star shared a series of photos of Winkleman, Daly and their co-stars taken during their stint on the show, and praised the pair for leading “with so much warmth, humour, grace and strength”.

“Two amazing women at the heart of one of the biggest shows on television,” she added. “That’s really rare and truly it’s powerful.”

She singled out the duo’s work on the show during the coronavirus pandemic as “truly special”, writing: “The way you held the show, kept the joy alive, and gave people hope in such uncertain times was incredible.”

Ex Strictly pro weighs in on Tess and Claudia’s departure

Friday 24 October 2025 11:20 , Katie Rosseinsky

Former Strictly Come Dancing professional Flavia Cacace has opened up about her experiences working with Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, noting that it will be “difficult” to replace the duo.

Cacace, who appeared on the BBC show between 2006 and 2012, winning the Glitterball trophy in her final year when she was paired up with gymnast Louis Smith, hailed the pair’s “amazing” sense of humour during an appearance on BBC Breakfast on Friday morning.

“They are genuinely amazing people and great at what they do, and it’s going to be difficult to replace them,” she said.

She added that “change is inevitable”, telling the show: “I left the year that Bruce [Forsyth] left, and I remember the feeling that you don't know what's going to happen because they are such an integral part of the show.

“And in the same way that Bruce was the show, I think Tess and Claudia are the show now.

“So it is a big change, and change always brings uncertainty.”

How Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman blazed a trail for women on TV

Friday 24 October 2025 11:40 , Katie Rosseinsky

When Claudia Winkleman joined Tess Daly to host Strictly Come Dancing in 2014, the pair made history as primetime TV’s first female presenting duo.

Winkleman had hosted spin-off show It Takes Two for a decade before getting the call up to the main programme, following the departure of legendary host Sir Bruce Forsyth.

Since then, they have steered the BBC show through 11 years of celebrity contestants, countless dazzling routines and a fair few controversies.

Daly has been part of the show since its launch in 2004, working alongside Forsyth.

Speaking after being made an MBE earlier this year, Daly said that being part of “the first all-female presenting duo on primetime telly” meant a lot to her “as a mother of girls, to sort of pave the way”.

Former Strictly pro James Jordan gives verdict on show’s future

Friday 24 October 2025 12:02 , Katie Rosseinsky

Former Strictly Come Dancing professional James Jordan has said the show will continue seamlessly after the exit of hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly.

“It’s a juggernaut you could change everyone on the panel, the judges, the professional dancers, the show is such a strong format, no matter who you have on there, it will be great,” Jordan said of the programme’s future.

The 47-year-old, who was a Strictly pro from 2006 to 2013, however noted that Winkleman and Daly were the foundational “bricks and water” of the programme. “The show wouldn’t have been as successful without them,” he said, adding it was a “big statement” for the duo to leave together.

Jordan dismissed speculation that Winkleman and Daly opted to leave the show following past bullying scandals but told MailOnline that BBC bosses would now need to make “big changes” to the show.

“Some of the pro dancers need to go, there needs to be more fresh blood in the professionals now,” Jordan said.

“I’m not naming names because that's unfair but some pros on the show are weak, you need to know when to hang up your shoes to be honest with you.”

Strictly 2025 contestant reveals how fellow competitors responded to news

Friday 24 October 2025 12:25 , Katie Rosseinsky

Strictly 2025 contestant Ross King has revealed how the current contestants’ WhatsApp group responded to news of Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman’s departure.

King is an entertainment correspondent for ITV morning shows and was paired up with professional dancer Jowita Przystal in the current series. They became the second couple to leave the show earlier this month, after a Thunderbirds-themed Paso Doble failed to win over the judges.

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine this morning, King told stand-in host (and past Strictly contestant) Ranvir Singh that he had initially been confused by his fellow competitors’ responses.

“I’m still on the WhatsApp group and then I thought, ‘why’s everyone saying, ‘Wow that’s fantastic?’” he said. “And then I realised that WTF doesn’t mean ‘Wow, that’s fantastic!’”

“So it really did come as a huge surprise to absolutely everyone.”

King noted that some commentators had questioned Winkleman and Daly’s decision to announce the news mid-season, but suggested that this meant that the pair could enjoy a “lovely build-up” towards their final show.

When will Tess and Claudia actually leave Strictly?

Friday 24 October 2025 13:32 , Katie Rosseinsky

Fear not, Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman will be continuing their Strictly Come Dancing duties until the very end of the year, the BBC has confirmed.

Paying tribute to both hosts during last night’s episode of It Takes Two, Janette Manrara revealed this year’s Strictly final would not be the pair’s last appearance, and confirmed both will return for the show’s annual Christmas special.

“We still have them for the rest of what promises to be a brilliant series and the Christmas special,” Manrara said.

The presenting duo stunned fans yesterday (23 October) after posting a video message to Tess’ Instagram page announcing news of their departure.

Daly, 56, has hosted the show for 21 years, while Winkleman, 53, joined as co-presenter on the main show in 2014.

Tess Daly admits she kept pregnancy secret from Strictly bosses before start of show

Friday 24 October 2025 14:30 , Katie Rosseinsky

Tess Daly has revealed she decided to keep her pregnancy a secret during the early days of her Strictly Come Dancing career.

Appearing on Giovanna Fletcher’s Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast on Tuesday (14 October), the host said that she initially decided not to tell BBC bosses back in 2004 that she was expecting her first child.

Daly said: “What if they didn’t want me because they don’t want a visibly pregnant woman on a prime time show on a Saturday night, which by the way in 2004, you didn’t see many.”

At a press conference a few weeks after Daly had accepted the job, she recalled having a “bump” and had to come clean. “Nobody minded and it was absolutely fine,” she said.

‘The greatest relationship of my career”: Claudia bids an emotional farewell to Strictly

Friday 24 October 2025 15:30 , Katie Rosseinsky

Claudia Winkleman admitted that it was “very difficult to put into words exactly what Strictly has meant to me” as she reflected on her time on the show.

In a post shared on Instagram shortly after she and co-host Tess Daly confirmed their joint departure, Winkleman admitted that Strictly has been her “everything” for more than 20 years.

“It’s very difficult to put into words exactly what Strictly has meant to me,” the presenter wrote.

“It’s been the greatest relationship of my career. From working on It Takes Two in 2004 until now it has been my everything, the show I will be eternally grateful for.

“I will never forget Len Goodman trying to teach me what a cucaracha is (I still don’t know) and the complete thrill and honour it was to work with Tess on the results show to cohosting on Saturday nights.”

She went on to joke that she has “always believed it’s best to leave a party before you’re fully ready to go” and hailed her co-star Daly as “funny, kind, whip smart and a true friend”.

Is it time to say goodbye to Strictly?

Friday 24 October 2025 16:30 , Katie Rosseinsky

The unthinkable has happened: Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly are leaving Strictly Come Dancing. Is it not foretold that when the raven-haired one leaves the Strictly tower, the BBC shall fall? asks Kat Brown.

The pair announced their plan to depart at the end of the series in a joint Instagram video, saying they’d always decided that if they left, it would be together. I don’t believe that version of events for a second. It feels unfeasible to keep hiring Daly, whose main qualification for live television is looking nice in a Bella Freud suit.

No matter. At times of national crisis such as this, it is always tempting to plonk something extreme on the table. Axe the winter fuel allowance. War with France. Vote Reform. So, my turn: is it time to say goodbye to Strictly for good?

It has become a one-show scandal factory. Intensive rehearsals and close proximity mean that the “Strictly curse” of pro-celebrity romance has broken up several relationships. Two male dancers were investigated last year over allegedly harsh teaching practices.

And then there was last year’s contestant, Go Compare opera singer Wynne Evans, who was ditched by the BBC as a radio presenter this year after making inappropriate comments at the Strictly tour launch, and whose wandering hands made his dance partner, Katya Jones, visibly uncomfortable.

Kat Brown weighs in on whether it’s time to bid farewell to the BBC show below...

“It’s the end of an era,” he added, before noting that change can be a “good thing”.

Strictly fans will miss Claudia Winkleman's offbeat sense of humour

Friday 24 October 2025 19:30 , Katie Rosseinsky

Strictly Come Dancing fans will certainly Claudia Winkleman’s wacky sense of humour when she steps down from the show, as this funny moment from Saturday night’s live show proves.

Winkleman and the show’s long-running conductor Dave Arch delighted fans after they recreated the infamous Coldplay kiss-cam moment during Saturday’s show, Ellie Muir reports.

As host Tess Daly introduced a dance routine to the band’s 2008 song “Viva La Vida”, the camera panned to a balcony where Winkleman was embracing Arch, which was a nod to one of the most viral moments of the year when a kiss-cam captured Astonomer CEO Andy Byron in an intimate moment with his HR executive Kristin Cabot at a Coldplay concert in Massachusetts.

Winkleman and Arch, mimicking the footage of Byron and Cabot, leapt out of each other’s arms and hid behind the balcony when the camera landed on them, feigning embarrassment.

Winkleman has previously stepped in for Norton on his show while he was on a break, giving her a taste of what it’s like to host a celebrity chat show.

The judge reflected on his “fond memories” of the “extraordinary pair”, in a video message posted to Instagram on Thursday (23 October).

Speaking about Daly, Du Beke applauded her for “introducing the world to this incredible, fabulous show of ours”.

He reflected on meeting Winkleman in series two when she began presenting It Takes Two. “I'm devastated, but whatever choices you make, I know they'll be the best for you.”

Former Strictly pro James Jordan gives verdict on show’s future as Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly quit

13:45 , Greg Evans

Chris Robshaw becomes third contestant to be eliminated

14:45 , Greg Evans

A reminder that last former England rugby player Chris Robshaw was the third contestant eliminated from this year’s show.

Summing up his time on Strictly, Robshaw told host Tess Daly that the show had given him a boost in confidence.

“For me, coming onto this journey, I had no confidence. To be told I had world-class qualities on the dancefloor today, even though we have to go home, that’s amazing to hear, so thank you very much. It’s given me such confidence,” he said.

Stefan Dennis ‘devastated’ after serious leg injury prevents him from flying home

15:15 , Greg Evans

Strictly Come Dancing star Stefan Dennis has been left unable to fly back to his family in Australia after sustaining a serious calf injury.

The 66-year-old actor, who was partnered with professional dancer Dianne Buswell, announced he was “devastated” to be forced to pull out of the BBC dance competition earlier this week.

Dennis, best known for playing Paul Robinson on Australian soap Neighbours, said his wife, actor Gail Easdale, had been left “pretty upset” by the doctor’s order for him not to board a plane until next month.

“I can’t fly for another two weeks because of the risk of deep vein thrombosis, which my wife is pretty upset about,” the soap star told the Mirror at this week’s Pride of Britain awards.

Fans decry Balvinder Sopal’s ‘ridiculous’ lack of support

15:45 , Greg Evans

Last week EastEnders actor Balvinder Sopal found herself in the bottom two for the second week in a row.

Judge Motsi Mabuse labelled Sopal “a powerhouse” following the performance, however the actor still landed in the bottom two for a second week in a row following a public vote.

Fans of the show shared their frustrations with the result on X/Twitter. “This is a joke… Bal was sensational tonight. how the fudge is she in the bottom two, again?!” one person questioned.

Another viewer added: “I can't believe Balvinder was in the dance off again, why? I voted for her, but she clearly doesn't have the public support, which is a great shame.”

Another person said it “frightens” them that Sopal was placed in the bottom two for two weeks running despite being at the top end of the Strictly leaderboard.

16:45 , Greg Evans

Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly made history as primetime TV’s first female presenting duo when they paired up to co-host Strictly Come Dancing in 2014.

Since then, they have guided the BBC show through 11 years of celebrity contestants, countless routines and controversies.

They now say the time is right to hand over the “sparkly baton”.

Meet Lewis Cope: Strictly’s last-minute contestant swapping the Dales for the dance floor

Actor Lewis Cope became the early hero of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing series when he was brought in to replace Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn, after he was forced to withdraw from the competition on medical grounds.

The 30-year-old Emmerdale star, who plays Nicky Milligan, said he was walking down Oxford Street on his way to meet a friend when he received the phone call saying he’d be part of the show.

Tess and Claudia have given Strictly the latest shock exit for a troubled show – but it’s not the death knell

18:00 , Greg Evans

The beloved presenting duo are leaving the ‘Strictly’ ballroom when the current season ends. Katie Rosseinsky looks at what their departure means for a show that’s been beset by troubles in recent years.

Tess and Claudia’s Strictly exit is the latest shocker for a troubled show

And we're off!

18:26 , Rachel McGrath

Icons week has begun! After Chris's elimination and Stefan's unfortunate exit due to injury, we're down to 11 couples. Tonight, they'll be dancing in honour of their 'icons' and I cannot wait to see how the hair and wardrobe team have transformed the stars. But - it has to be said - this week feels a little less about the dancing, as everyone is still reeling from the news that Tess and Claudia are leaving the show after this series.

My phone has never gone off as much as it did in the wake of their announcement on Thursday, and it's fair to say there's been plenty of speculation about what could be happening behind the scenes, and when (and why) the decision was made. Will we get answers to those questions tonight? I highly doubt it. But it will be very interesting to see how the scandal-averse Strictly handles this one... let's go!

Claudia and Tess address exit

18:29 , Rachel McGrath

They’ve tackled it head on!

After being given a longer than usual round of applause, Claudia and Tess addressed their exit as they opened the show.

Claudia said: “We want to thank you for your beautiful mesasges, we’ve got another eight weeks on this incredible show and a Strictly champion to crown.”

“We cannot wait to spend the rest of the series with you, our incredible couples and these four,” Tess added, as she introduced the judges.

Lewis opens the show with a quickstep

18:34 , Rachel McGrath

Opening the show with a quickstep time, it’s Lewis and Katya!

They're dancing to "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash, who - I have to admit - is not who I would have thought Lewis would pay tribute to for Icons Week but he made it clear in his VT that he’s a huge fan of the star.

This is yet another style that really suits Lewis. Surely we’re looking at a finalist here?

Craig labels Lewis 'incredible'

18:39 , Rachel McGrath

Here’s what the judges told Lewis...

Motsi: “what will I say, this is how you open a show. This is so on top. I love the way you work with music. You’re capable of being in control then here, with the Charleston, exploding all over the place.”

Shirley: “Overall this was a good quickstep and you really good understanding music. For me, it’s a little back-weighted and you have to try when you’re moving fast, to control all body parts. It’s something that will get better as you’re moving along.”

Anton: “It’s great. What you do is great dancing. Timing is perfect. Energy has calmed down a bit which is excellent, because you’re dancing together. Your form needs to smarten up a bit. If you do those things, the sky is the limit.”

Craig: “Tiny, tiny bit of gapping. And your toppling does need sorting a little bit but I love how you handled that. It was clean, it had flight. You are inrcedible.”

And his scores are... 9(!), 9, 8 and 8 - a total of 34.

Karen gives the rumba a go

18:43 , Rachel McGrath

Alex's week four rumba will be tough to beat but giving it a go, it's Karen and Carlos.

The former England player has so far done a brilliant job of getting into character (especially for a non-actor) and throwing herself into each routine whole-heartedly.

How is she doing with this performance to "Think Twice" by Celine Dion? First of all, Karen looks *phenomenal*. She’s doing pretty great at the rumba walks but her arms are not quite in sync. And it looked as though she may have forgotten a little of the choreography there...

Judges spot 'wobbly' moment in Karen's rumba

18:48 , Rachel McGrath

Here are the judges’ comments for Karen...

Shirley: “The whole look of how you dance tonight is lovely. There are eight types of rumbas walks and Carlos picked the hardest ones for you to do, and you did amazing. It went a little bit wobbly in the middle but Carlos, your leading skills were great. I really enjoyed it.”

Anton: “You danced very well there but you got a little tense and when you get tense, sometimes it goes a little out of balance. It lacked breath and that made you go a little off in the middle there.”

Craig: “Your balance was off, you need to smooth this dance out, it lacked fluidity. Your free arm needs placement, it was left to its own devices. But you had lovely, lovely straight legs which I enjoyed.”

Motsi: “You used your legs, you could see the bending and the stretching, it’s really difficult to get. Dancing to slow music is a little different to fast music and learning to translate the music... if you get that, you have all the power we are used to seeing with you. Use your body and let it go.”

Karen seems a little down after that! And she’s told Claudia she’s “gutted”.

Karen’s scores are... 7, 7, 7 and another 7 - a total of 28. And now she’s smiling again!

Ellie transforms into Strictly Spice

18:52 , Rachel McGrath

It's salsa time for Ellie and Vito! And medley time for Dave Arch and the Strictly band.

Ellie - whose couple's choice was without a doubt one of the highlights last Saturday - is paying tribute to her icons, the Spice Girls, which I obviously love.

And - for the first time - Vito has included lifts in the routine, which they’re making look easy. I’m a big fan.

Panel praises Ellie for improving

18:58 , Rachel McGrath

Here’s what the judges have said...

Craig: “I loved the energy but Ellie, you need more hip rotation. When you did the drop away lift, it would have been nicer if you had your leg straight. Your transitions need to be smoother. But the personality you bring was incredible.”

Motsi: “You bring more than personality to the dance floor. I can see you’re growing, I can see the connection between you too. You are growing with this competition and you are a force, keep going.”

Shirley: “I loved the execution of the lifts and I could see you doing the things we have asked you to do. Not only do you bring the energy but you do not make mistakes. And you don’t look as though you have one nervous bone in your body. The performing standard today was brilliant.”

Anton: “So much to love, so much to enjoy. You lighten up the whole place with your energy and performance. I didn’t find the transitions clunky, I thought it was pretty good. Early on in this competition, your timing was a little ahead but now you’ve nailed it. Keep going, you’re amazing.”

Ellie’s scores are... 6, 8, 7, 7 - a total of 28.

Ellie receives a special message

18:59 , Rachel McGrath

Aw this is cute - Ellie is dressed as Baby Spice for her routine and the Strictly gang have got her a video message from Emma Bunton herself!

She told Ellie: “I have been watching you every week and you’re my favourite, then I heard that I’m your favourite Spice Girl.

“I want to tell you you’re a superstar and all the girls are watching your dances. Sending a big kiss for Vito too and lots of love.”

Alex transforms into Dolly Parton

19:02 , Rachel McGrath

Performing a homage to Dolly Parton, it's Alex and Johannes. Alex has had a truly stunning Strictly journey so far and once again topped the leaderboard last week - with a rumba no less.

Tonight she's taking on a foxtrot to Dolly Parton's "Here You Come Again" with an incredible wig, of course.

This is a really lovely routine and Alex is basically gliding across the dance floor. They’re both beaming from ear to ear too and clearly adore dancing with each other.

'Divine' Alex labelled 'beautiful' to watch

19:08 , Rachel McGrath

Here are the judges’ comments for Alex...

Anton: “She is divine! I loved it. I was transfixed by your legs. Your leg speed, which is the most difficult thing to do, was perfect. You were in perfect harmony with Johannes. It was all absolutely beautiful. I completely loved it.”

Craig: “It wasn’t all beautiful. The footwork was a little haphazard, there was a bit of gaping. But on the positive, you maintained your frame throughout and your musicality is a sensation.”

Motsi: “You’re the queen of ease and effortlessness. This routine is tough but you never see that with you. Nothing stresses you. You had a little hiccup there but you kept it up, it looked like nothing happened. You’re beautiful to watch.”

Shirley: “You’ve got the best lady frame in this competition, you look as light as a feather. I think the connection is getting better. I would like to see, now as you’re moving up, if you could really get your footwork nailed a bit more. It starts in the feet.”

Alex’s scores are... 7, 8, 8 and 9 - a total of 32.

George jives into Icons Week

19:11 , Rachel McGrath

Up next it's George and Alexis with a jive, which feels like a style the social media star could do very well with.

They're dancing to "As It Was" by Harry Styles and George is wearing high waisted heart print trousers with braces and somehow pulling them off? How?

(BBC)

George divides the judges

19:16 , Rachel McGrath

Here are the judges’ comments...

Craig: “It was a little bit flat footed which made it look stompy. You need to think almost ahead of the beat. Your presentation is always fantastic and you are so watchable.”

Motsi: “When it started, it was great and it just went a little bit [downhill] towards the end. You are capable of doing it but I think you need to really concentrate on the dance floor.”

Shirley: “There was a good mix of jive and some swing. But I’m with Craig on this and there were mistakes in the pivots in the middle. Two or three mistakes going on in there. I love the partnering skills and you embodied the role of what you were doing.”

Anton: “I thought the jive was great Your biggest asset is how well you dance together. This makes the whole thing look great immediately. Your standing leg could have worked a bit stronger but I thought that was a super performance.”

George’s scores are... 6 (ouch!), 7, 6 and 8 - a total of 27.

Vicky performs unexpectedly emotional Couple's Choice

19:21 , Rachel McGrath

Geordie icon Vicky Pattison is transforming into her hometown her Cheryl Cole for her Couple's Choice, which is set to "Fight For This Love" by Cheryl.

“I feel I can relate to her,” she said in her VT. “I started out in this industry at about 21 and I made some bad decisions. Now I do my best to be able to look in the mirror and be proud of myself.

“I worked on myself and now I’m in a place that makes me happy. I’m finally becoming a woman I’m proud of. “

I have to say, going into tonight's show, this was my favourite of all the choices and easily the dance I was most looking forward to seeing.

They’ve slowed down the track for the start of this which is working really well. Considering this is a pop routine, it’s very emotional. And there are some fantastic wow moments with lots of fire behind them!

Vicky's Couple's Choice hailed her 'best dance yet'

19:27 , Rachel McGrath

Here are the judges’ comments for Vicky...

Motsi: “I love a Couple’s Choice and I could see you love a Couple’s Choice, and that song. I’ve never seen you perform better than this. your commitment, your conviction. The growth you have shown is unbelievable

Shirley: “I dread to think how many hours you must have spent in the studio to get that focus and synchronisation. I loved the delivery of the positivity from foot to foot. Normally the amateur dancer doesn’t quite get that. It’s your best dance so far.”

Anton: “There’s no way you could have been able to do that three weeks ago. What I love about this, and the show, is it’s becoming a bit of a metaphor for your life. It was amazing.”

Craig: “The first step down was slightly out of sync. Also you need to match one another’s energies when you’re doing side by side. But my goodness, it was clean, it was tight, it was precise. Yes, your best dance yet.”

Vicky’s scores are... 8, 8, 8 and 9 - a total of 33.

Vicky congratulated by her icon Cheryl

19:28 , Rachel McGrath

Before receiving her scores, it was Vicky’s turn to receive a special message from her icon, Cheryl Cole.

“Congratulations on your Strictly success,” she said. “I’m very honoured and humbled to be your icon for this week.

“I know you’ve got it in you because you’re a Geordie. I’m rooting for you from home.”

Balvinder bounces back from the dance-off

19:31 , Rachel McGrath

Fresh from another dance-off, it’s Balvinder and Julian up next. Last week, she came incredibly close to leaving the competition when the panel were split between saving her or Chris - and only stayed in the competiton because Craig used his deciding vote to save her.

It's a shame Balvinder doesn't seem to be winning over viewers because her performances have shown promise and she's definitely developing as a dancer.

Tonight she's doing a quickstep to "Texas Hold Em" by Beyonce and it’s not a bad effort, but it certainly looks as though being in the dance-offs has knocked Balvinder’s confidence.

Judges tell Balvinder: 'Don't be disheartened'

19:37 , Rachel McGrath

Here’s what the judges had to say to Balvinder...

Shirley: “First of all, you look fantastic. Anything that was solo today, I could see you giving all your confidence. When you get together, that still needs work. The personality was great and you brought a good A-game today.”

Anton: “You had a great vibe but I agree with Shirley, it looked a little hesitant. I’d like you to feel like you’re striding out of your comfort zone. Sometimes you dance underneath yourself and it looks as though you’re dragging a bit. I want to be able to feel more convinced by it. It’s a good standard but I feel like you can do more.”

Craig: “For me, it needed a more elegant top line. It became very hoe-down is because of [your theme]. I absolutely love this version of you, I think you are brilliant.”

Motsi: “It’s tough, you’ve been in the dance-off twice and you keep coming back. I’ve seen your improvement within the ballroom dancing and I think your performance skills have improved. Don’t be disheartened. Keep fighting and do your improvements. You are shining.”

Her scores are... 7, 7, 7 and another 7 - a total of 28.

Harry shows his serious side with Argentine Tango

19:41 , Rachel McGrath

With an Argentine Tango to "Caught Up" by Usher, it's Harry and Karen's turn on the dancefloor.

Last week, we saw a sultry and serious side to Harry as he got into character for the rumba and this routine also requires switching things up and bringing a different energy.

In his VT, Harry talked a lot about needing to be “silky smooth” and if you ask me, he’s mastered that. I do think it feels as though Karen is absolutely dancing for her life while Harry isn’t quite doing as much though...

Harry divides the panel

19:47 , Rachel McGrath

Here are the judges’ comments for Harry...

Craig: “I didn’t [love it]. I felt like you were walking through it and not actually dancing from step to step. I wasn’t entirely fond of throwing the groove stuff in the there. I felt like you were hammering it and that ruined it for me.”

Motsi: “I know you have energy, I know you could have bashed that, but you didn’t. You had control, you had control of the music, the connection. It really takes a lot of courage to say I’m going to be in the background but you had that demureness, you had the suave and you were always in control. For me that shows your growth and connection. Keep going.”

Shirley: “I disagree with Motsi, I think it lacked breath. What I liked was you were in control of putting your lady where she needed to be. But in between, you mustn’t forget yourself. It got mixed for me between bump and grind, and a tango. It didn’t have that sharp... I was torn. I was in the middle.”

Anton: “This is the joy of having four judges, I’m with Motsi. I get what the others are saying but I liked the style, the style was king for me. I saw the Argentine tango. I thought it was terrific, keep it going.”

Harry’s scores are... 6 (ouch!), 9(!), 7, 8 - a total of 30.

Amber cha chas to Ariana Grande

19:51 , Rachel McGrath

It's Amber and Nikita's turn to cha cha and they're doing it to Ariana Grande's "Break Free".

While Amber topped the leaderboard when scores for week one and two were combined, she's yet to actually get the highest score on any given week. Could tonight be her night? The choreography is amazing and Amber looks confident on the dance floor.

There’s also plenty of actual cha cha cha-ing and nice changes of pace. I’m a fan!

Amber is 'so close to a 10' says Motsi

19:56 , Rachel McGrath

Here are the judges’ comments for Amber...

Shirley: “Let me congratulate you on those feet, you’ve been working on those. In some of the positions, they’re beautifully shaped. I would have liked more straight legs but I thought your dynamic performance is a plus in your partnership. I just want a bit more ooze and fluidity.”

Anton: “I don’t agree with Shirley at all! No I do a bit... let me start with this: amazing. I loved it. [he’s now demo-ing how she needs to change her footwork, much to Shirley’s amusement]

Craig: “The straighter legs, that would solve every issue. There was lovely hip action, you feel the music beautifully, that was truly a great dance.”

Motsi: “When you dance, I am looking forward to seeing what you guys are going to present because there’s so much creativity. You guys are so close [to a 10], it’s just a tiny little bit. I can feel the 10, I can almost touch it. Just push.”

Amber’s scores are... 8, 8, 8 and a 9 - a total of 33.

Jimmy transforms into Prince for American smooth

20:01 , Rachel McGrath

Jimmy and Lauren are dancing now!

These two have such a great vibe together and seem to be going from strength to strength. The former footballer’s Icons Week pick is Prince and they're performing an American smooth to "Purple Rain", with Jimmy sporting a brilliant wig, of course.

This is a lovely routine too - Jimmy is certainly bringing the smooth elements needed. He looks a little unsure when out of hold and is sneaking glances at Lauren to check he’s on track (which he is!). And they’ve ended on some brilliant lifts. All in all, a great effort.

Jimmy lands his highest score yet

20:06 , Rachel McGrath

Here’s what the judges said...

Anton: “You did keep your frame. Well done. I like it. It was up and I liked that. I was really impressed with your legs, you moved across the floor beautifully. All in all, I really enjoyed it.”

Craig: “I felt you were dancing a little bit underneath yourself. The timing into the lifts was magnificent and it’s so wonderful seeing a completely different side of you.”

Motsi: “I actually loved the way you move. I can see you give so much effort on the technique, I can see the hard work. In the middle, it got better, it got lighter. For me, I just think if you can add a bit of performance to sell it a little better. I just want you to enjoy more and give us that enjoyment because you’re a good dancer Jimmy.”

Shirley: “If I’m honest, I’m a bit in and out on this performance. Your first opening walk here was very impressive and then as it came across the short wall, it got tangled up a little bit. The lifts are fantastic but you lost your way a little bit.”

Jimmy’s scores are... 7, 8, 7 and 8 - a total of 30.

La Voix closes the show

20:10 , Rachel McGrath

La Voix is closing tonight’s Icons spectacular with a salsa to Cher’s "Strong Enough".

The Drag Race star is certainly one of the weaker dancers left in the competition and there's no doubt that La Voix breathed a HUGE sigh of relief when she dodged the dance-off after last week's dreadful cha cha left her bottom of the leaderboard.

Is she pulling it back tonight? Well, it’s started with a nice amount of time-wasting as La Voix is singing “Believe” and now she’s moving, there’s not much hip movement at all. I think La Voix could be in trouble again...

La Voix praised for improving on disastrous week four

20:16 , Rachel McGrath

Here are the judges’ comments for La Voix...

Motsi: “I think I just have to forget last week, you wiped it away. Much better. I love the whole idea, the concept, the singing. Absolutely loved it, keep going.”

Shirley: “It was definitely better than a two so we can start with that. I thought some of it was sizzling and red hot. You still got on the wrong foot at the beginning, two times. But you picked it up, you carried on. In comparison to last week, that was fantastic.”

Anton: “I know somewhere in the world, Cher is going ‘when I grow up I want to be La Voix’. I loved it. This is a show number, a show salsa. You embodied it, I loved it and didn’t see you go wrong.”

Craig: “I think it looked like you were recovering from a double hip replacement. No movement at all, only side to side and that was a little stiff. I love the dampness, I think you look brilliant, love the singing, all of that stuff. You are a bit of a comeback queen because last week was appalling. Anything would be better.”

Here are La Voix’s scores... 6, 7, 7 and 8(!) - a total of 28.

The vote has opened!
