Tesla recalls almost 4,000 of its celebrity-loved Cybertrucks due to accelerator fault

Tesla is recalling almost 4,000 of its Cybertrucks to fix an accelerator pedal pad fault.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall on Friday, stating that the throttle issue could increase the risk of an accident.

It has not been stated if this applies to all or some of the models of Cybertruck, but at least 3,878 will be going back to the factory this summer.

The electric-powered 4x4, which has a starting price of £66,000, is advertised as "durable and rugged enough to go anywhere" and has been a favourite among celebrities.

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian are all reportedly owners of the vehicle, as are Serena Williams, Spike Lee and Bad Bunney.

But the pedal pad issue is the latest glitch in the development of the vehicle, which went on the market late last year after a two-year delay.

In December, a clip went viral showing a Cybertruck getting stuck on a Californian hillside and requiring a tow from an apparently more rugged Ford model.

Tesla has said that the Cybertruck can pull up to 5,000kg and travel from 0-60mph in 2.6 seconds.

The manufacturer will replace or repair the accelerator pedal assembly at no charge and owners will be notified through letters mailed to them in June.

In the first quarter of 2024, Tesla had three recalls affecting about 2.4 million vehicles, according to a report by recall management firm BizzyCar.

The company's shares fell nearly three per cent on Friday.

Elon Musk, who owns Tesla, has not commented on X, formerly Twitter, but did share his glee when it emerged Beyonce and Lady Gaga both owned a Cybertruck.

“Well, they clearly have great taste,” Musk tweeted in February.

“Important to note that no one receives a discount (including me) and no one is paid to promote our products.”
