Tesla is recalling a small number of 2026 Model Y vehicles because improperly tightened front suspension fasteners could allow part of the suspension to loosen or separate, potentially causing a driver to lose control of the vehicle. The recall covers just 19 Model Y vehicles, making it unusually narrow compared with many national vehicle recalls.
According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall information, the affected vehicles were manufactured between July 26 and August 4, 2026. The recall is identified as NHTSA Campaign No. 26V558000. Tesla’s internal reference number is SB-26-31-004.
What Could Go Wrong With the Model Y Suspension?
The problem involves fasteners connecting the front suspension lateral link to the sub-frame. According to the recall notice, one or more of those fasteners may not have been properly tightened during production. If a fastener isn’t sufficiently tightened, the lateral link could gradually loosen or potentially separate from the sub-frame.
That separation could change the vehicle’s wheel alignment. NHTSA warns that the resulting shift could cause a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash. Because this is a physical hardware issue involving suspension fasteners, affected owners will need service work rather than an over-the-air software update to complete the recall repair.
Tesla Will Inspect and Repair Affected Vehicles for Free
Tesla Service will tighten or replace the affected fasteners at no charge to vehicle owners. Technicians will also check the vehicle’s wheel alignment. If the inspection finds that other components were damaged because of the improperly tightened fasteners, Tesla says those related parts will be replaced as necessary. As with other safety recalls, owners will not be charged for the required recall repair. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed October 30, 2026.
Only 19 Vehicles Are Included in This Recall
Although the potential consequence is serious, the recall population is extremely small. NHTSA records show only 19 potentially affected 2026 Model Y vehicles, with production dates spanning a short period from July 26 through August 4.
That means owning a 2026 Model Y does not automatically mean a vehicle has the suspension defect. Owners who want to know whether their specific Model Y is affected can check using the vehicle’s 17-character Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN. NHTSA’s online recall lookup allows drivers to enter a VIN to see whether a vehicle has an unrepaired safety recall.

Recall repairs are free, so an affected owner should not have to pay Tesla to tighten or replace the fasteners, check the wheel alignment, or replace related parts damaged because of the defect. Owners should also be cautious about unexpected messages demanding payment or financial information to complete a safety recall.
