Tesla has announced a recall of 1.68 million cars in China to address a potential safety issue related to trunk latches. The recall, mandated by China's market regulator, aims to ensure that drivers are alerted when their trunk is not securely locked shut. This recall affects certain imported Model S and Model X vehicles, as well as domestically produced Model 3 and Model Y cars manufactured between October 15, 2020, and July 17, 2024.

The concern highlighted in the recall notice is that an unlocked trunk lid could unexpectedly open while the vehicle is in motion, potentially obstructing the driver's view. Although there is no specific mention of such incidents occurring in Tesla cars, the company is taking proactive measures to address the issue.

To rectify the problem, Tesla plans to implement a remote software upgrade, which will be carried out free of charge for affected vehicle owners. This approach underscores Tesla's commitment to ensuring the safety and functionality of its vehicles, even after they have been sold.

China holds significant importance for Tesla, serving as both a key market and a major production hub. However, the company faces increasing competition from local Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers. Despite efforts to boost sales through price reductions and attractive financing options, Tesla reported a notable decline in net income for the second quarter of this year.
