Tesla Deliveries Top Wall Street's Forecast. Its Stock is Jumping.

Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter of 2026, beating Wall Street expectations as the electric vehicle maker showed a sharp improvement from earlier this year despite intensifying global competition.

The Elon Musk-led company said Thursday that it produced 464,391 vehicles during the quarter, meaning deliveries exceeded production by more than 22,000 vehicles. Tesla shares climbed more than 5% following the announcement.

Wall Street analysts had expected roughly 461,100 deliveries, according to StreetAccount consensus cited by CNBC. Tesla's own company-compiled consensus, released earlier this week and based on estimates from 24 sell-side analysts, called for 461,974 deliveries.

That means Tesla exceeded its company-compiled consensus by nearly 25,000 vehicles, or about 5.3%. The result, however, was still below last year's record third quarter. Tesla delivered 497,099 vehicles in the third quarter of 2025, making the latest figure a decline of about 2.1% year over year. Last year's quarter remains Tesla's delivery record.

However, the sequential numbers tell a different story. Deliveries increased from 480,126 in the second quarter and were dramatically higher than the 358,023 vehicles Tesla delivered during the first three months of 2026.

Tesla's Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV continued to dominate its automotive business. The company delivered 478,237 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles during the quarter, compared with 8,295 vehicles across its other models. Together, the Model 3 and Model Y accounted for roughly 98% of total deliveries. Tesla produced 457,387 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles during the period.

The stronger-than-expected quarter comes at a crucial time for Tesla. The company is facing increasingly aggressive competition from Chinese EV manufacturers including BYD and Xiaomi, while attempting to reverse consecutive annual declines in vehicle sales. Tesla has also dealt with consumer backlash surrounding Musk and changes to U.S. EV incentives.

The federal electric vehicle tax credit created under the Inflation Reduction Act had originally been scheduled to remain available through 2032. However, legislation signed by President Donald Trump ended the incentive after September 30, 2025, removing a subsidy that had helped support U.S. EV purchases.

Globally, however, demand for electric vehicles continues to expand. The International Energy Agency's 2026 Global EV Outlook said EVs and plug-in hybrids accounted for about one in four new cars sold worldwide in 2025, compared with less than 5% in 2020.

Tesla's energy business also continued growing. The company deployed 13.7 gigawatt-hours of energy storage products during the third quarter, up from 13.5 GWh in the previous quarter and 12.5 GWh during the same period last year.

Tesla's energy storage portfolio includes its Megapack systems for large-scale commercial and utility projects and the newer Megablock configuration. The battery systems can store electricity generated from sources including solar and wind and provide backup power for utilities and energy-intensive facilities such as data centers.

However, Tesla has cautioned that deliveries and energy storage deployments are only two measures of performance and that quarterly results also depend on factors including vehicle pricing, costs and foreign exchange movements.

Tesla is scheduled to report its full third-quarter financial results after the market closes on October 21, when investors will get a clearer picture of whether stronger-than-expected vehicle deliveries translated into improved revenue, margins and profits.
