Tesco workers have revealed that they missed out on a Christmas bonus, according to reports published today (Friday). Shop staff said that, for the second year, they were given no cash or voucher bonus.
One staff member of the UK’s biggest supermarket chain say they were given a box of Quality Street for their efforts, according to the report in the Guardian. In 2020 staff were given a 10% Christmas bonus, while other years saw them presented with a shopping voucher.
For 2022, Tesco itself said it doubled the staff discount to 20% on specific days during the Christmas run-up instead of offering vouchers or a cash bonus. One staff member told the Guardian 2022 was the second year he was given Quality Street as his 'bonus'.
He said the sweets were given at the discretion of his store manager, despite his store taking more than £10m in December. “They’re certainly penny-pinching and trying to drive costs down,” the Guardian quotes him as saying.
Bonuses were given to shop staff in April, May and June 2020 according to Tesco, to mark their work during the pandemic. A bonus was also paid out for December 2020 to “recognise their exceptional effort during the peak Christmas trading period”.
The Guardian adds that, in June 2021, Tesco paid a 2% “recognition bonus” and paid another – worth 1.25% of pay – in May last year.
