Tesco vows to price-lock thousands of products until Easter to help with cost of living

Tesco has announced today that it will be price-locking thousands of products until Easter of this year, in order to support customers with the cost of living.

The announcement comes as UK food prices are reported to have soared to a record rate in December.

The big four supermarket chain said the price lock would be not only on popular branded products such as Heinz, McCains, and Birds Eye, but on its own brand staples too.

The price lock will not only cover Tesco ’s fresh, frozen, and cupboard items, but it will also expand to health and beauty products as well as pet food and household products such as detergent.

The move has been made to help customers stick to their budgets and spend less on their shopping, as the prices of the products they buy will not rise for the next few months.

Alongside its announcement, Tesco shared a list of some of the products that would remain the same price until Easter.

These include:

  • Heinz Baked Beans - £0.65
  • Birds Eye 4 Breaded Cod Cakes - £1.40
  • Bakers Whirlers Dog Treats Bacon and Cheese - £1.00
  • Herbal Essences Dazzling Shine Shampoo - £1.95
  • Robinsons Orange Squash - £1.25
  • Surf Tropical Lily 3in1 Wash Capsules - £5.00
  • Sarsons Malt Vinegar - £0.85
  • Listerine Spearmint Mouthwash - £0.99
  • Tesco Breaded Plaice Fillets - £5.25
  • Kelloggs All Bran Cereal - £3.00
  • Nescafe Original Instant Coffee - £3.00
  • Tesco 80 Teabags - £1.00
  • Johnson’s Baby Shampoo - £1.45
  • Tesco 2in1 Anti-Dandruff Shampoo - £1.10
  • Tesco Garlic Baguette - £0.95

Jason Tarry, chief executive of Tesco said: “As we start the New Year, we know times are tough for many of our customers right now.

“We hope this extended price lock commitment gives our customers the certainty of knowing that over a thousand household favourites and own brand essentials will stay at the same low price for months to come – helping them budget when they need it most.”

Tesco previously announced other price locks for its products, with the most recent being in October last year, which lasted until the start of 2023.

Tesco said its price locks go “hand-in-hand” with its Aldi Price Match, Tesco Clubcard deals, and its own-brand products to help customers with the rising cost of food prices.

According to official figures released today, annual food inflation jumped to 13.3 per cent in December; up from 12.4 per cent in November.

The data comes from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and the data firm Nielsen, with the BRC claiming this was the highest monthly rate since it began collecting data in 2005.

The BRC said the reason for the increase in food prices on supermarket shelves was due to the rising cost of animal feed, fertiliser, and energy.

The trade body warned that consumers would probably face further increases in 2023.
