Tesco shoppers say 'it's the end of days' after slamming supermarket for unexpected price hike

Tesco has increased the price of its popular lunchtime meal deal due to soaring costs - and customers aren't very happy about it. The meal deal – which comprises a sandwich, a snack and a drink – had sat at £3 for the past 10 years.

Recently, the UK’s largest supermarket chain had increased the price of the meal to £3.50 for customers without Tesco’s Clubcard loyalty card. But the new price will see the meal deal cost £3.40 for Clubcard members and £3.90 for other customers.

More than 70% of meal deals are purchased by customers with a Clubcard membership. The increase comes days after official data from the Office for National Statistics showed that food and drink inflation jumped to 14.5% last month – the highest since 1980.

The cost of food production has jumped in the face of the war in Ukraine, which has sparked higher grain, oil and energy prices, as well as weakness in the pound. A Tesco spokesman said: “Clubcard members will pay just £3.40 for a main, snack and drink, making our meal deal an ideal way to grab a great value lunch on-the-go.

"And with savings of up to £3 on millions of possible combinations across our stores, including the recent addition of Costa hot drinks, and our ever-popular Christmas sandwiches which join the meal deal for the festive period, we’ve got something for every taste.”

Taking to Twitter, Tesco customers shared their surprise and disappointment at the hike. @fzverr said: "they increased tesco meal deal prices, i am not happy," as @jess_blxck penned: "Tesco meal deal price is rising, this is it. This is the end of times."

"Tesco raising meal deals prices ends an era of the best valued thing this country has ever produced," reminisced @lewisyeo_, with a sad face emoji, while @EthanRuparelia quipped: "feel like pure s**t, just want my £3 tesco meal deal back".

Twitter user @ThomasMcNally05 said: "The Tesco meal deal has gone up to £3.40. Time to declare the real economic crisis," while @manlikesheltzy echoed: "£3.90 for Tesco meal deals, nah this economy is crazy," with a laughing face emoji,

@jadelmasterson declared: "I don’t wanna live in a world where a Tesco meal deal isn’t £3", with a broken-hearted emoji, and @ihavesomebread commented: "£3.90 for a f****n Tesco meal deal are you jokin."
