Tesco ready meals are getting smaller as retailers blame cost of raw materials for rising prices

All of Tesco's own-brand ready meals have been swapped for smaller versions but the prices of some items have gone up. The supermarket chain has cut 50g from the size of its meals.

For example, the Sweet Potato Red Thai Curry & Jasmine Rice meal has been switched from a 450g to a 400g version but gone up in price from £2.75 to £2.80. Some meals - for instance, the 800g cottage pie - have stayed at the same price, but still shrunk by 50g.

Research from trade publication The Grocer, using data from retail research agency Assosia, shows that Tesco is one of many supermarkets downsizing ready meal portions. The data shows that Morrisons did the same last year, shrinking the portion sizes of a number of curry ready meals from 450g to 400g while increasing the price from £2.75 to £3.49.
