Tesco Mobile makes big change to roaming charges - and it's good news for customers

Tesco Mobile will not be charging customers for data roaming until after 2023, the telecoms firm has announced.

The mobile phone arm of the supermarket chain has extended its free "Home from Home" roaming package until the end of this year.

This means Tesco customers can travel to 48 different countries across Europe and pay no extra charges for using their mobile data.

If you travel outside one of these listed countries, sadly you will be charged extra.

Tesco Mobile was originally due to reintroduce roaming fees in January this year, before delaying the move to May.

It has now pushed back the changes for a second time, until 2024.

Rachel Swift, Tesco Mobile's chief customer officer, said: “As we move towards the summer months, we know how helpful it is to stay connected when abroad.

“That’s why, for the whole of 2023, our customers can continue to tap into their UK allowances for free in 48 destinations in Europe and beyond – so they can roam and relax.”

Tesco Mobile says it is going to confirm the future of its roaming package for 2024 onwards in "due course".

Many of the major networks have already reintroduced roaming charges after the UK left the European Union with the exception being O2 who said it would not reintroduce fees at all.

Before this, mobile phone firms were banned from charging customers extra fees to use their UK minutes, texts and data in Europe.

If roaming charges are reintroduced, then not everyone will be affected by them.

All pay monthly Tesco Mobile customers who joined the plan or upgraded before June 16 2022 will be able to continue using their data allowance in Europe until they choose to upgrade.

Tesco Mobile's pay-as-you-go customers are also not impacted by the reintroduction of roaming fees because they already pay by usage both in the UK and abroad.
