Tesco magazine from 2007 leaves people in disbelief at food price changes

Remnants of the past can make us think of happier times or childhoods long forgotten but they can also offer insight into a time we may not even consider that long ago.

A Tesco magazine from 2007 has surfaced on Reddit, revealing prices for household items and leaving the viewers shocked at how times have changed. It may be hard to hear but 2007 was actually 15 years ago now and a lot has changed since then.

In the year the iPhone was first sold and Tony Blair left office, some household items were seriously cheap and this sales page from an old Tesco magazine reveals all.

Customers could save 3p on their vegetable oil back in 2007 which was on sale at 56p for a litre bottle - now that very same bottle would set you back £1.75. In keeping with regular inflation this should have sat at less than £1 today but has more than tripled in price instead.

Even on name brands like Fairy and Bounty - now called Plenty - the prices were unbelievably low, with a 500ml bottle of Fairy and two kitchen rolls giving you a combined total of £2.43. Nowadays customers would be looking at £2.70 just for one 100 sheet roll of Plenty, no washing up liquid in sight.

The post's comments were filled with people who were shocked at how prices had skyrocketed in just 15 years, with one saying: "Bought a 12 pack of crisps for £3.50 today" in reference to the 14 pack of Walkers shown for £1.92 in the magazine.

"Look at the price of the oil- bought some at the weekend and nearly fainted at the price", put another shocked Redditor while someone else said: "It's funny how some things have barely changed in price, some decreased, and some gone nuts like the oil."

Another added: "£2 for a kilo of chicken thighs? Take me back. Immediately." to which one person did point out: "Tesco sell 1kg of chicken thighs for £2.90 now. £2 in 2007 is £3.11 with inflation, so they've slightly gone down in price."

The price of meat seemed to be one thing that users were defending as a second person said: "Pork chops have gone up to £6.28 per kg, that's a 22% increase which ain't too bad but chickens gone up by 40%! Miss Tesco being the big shop and not the last place I'd go now."

Someone else quoted inflation rises in response to this but other users reminded them that wages have not gone up in line with inflation so this is not as cut and dry as it seems.

For many the big question was not the price but the new size of products, as one user mentioned that Cadbury's chocolate was no longer sold in 250g bars.

They worked out what this meant for the price, commenting: "The pre-offer price in this leaflet is £1.35 for 250g. A 180g bar (they don't do 250g any more, by the looks of it) is currently £2.00 in Tesco. So, was £5.40 per kilo, now £11.20."

While prices may have risen, some joked about our tastes changing too with one commenter adding: "Bottom shelf 'Lambrini' and "French red wine" being actually advertised. Christ I should hope we've come a long way in our culinary tastes since then."
