Tesco issues warning for Clubcard users as app change could see them miss out on points

Tesco shoppers have been warned about a change coming into force from next week which could see them miss out on Clubcard points if they don't take action.

Some users opt to use an app on their phone to scan their Clubcard at the checkout, rather than a physical card - but two of the main apps used by shoppers are set to be axed. The Tesco Pay+ app will be retired on Monday, February 27, and the Tesco Clubcard app will also shut "soon", although an exact date is yet to be confirmed for the closure.

The MoneySavingExpert website explains that shoppers who use these apps will need to download the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app instead, which is available for free on Android and iPhone devices. This revamped app combines the features of the Pay+ and Clubcard apps into one, meaning that customers can use it to pay, order a delivery, check stock, view their Clubcard balance, and spend Clubcard vouchers.

On the Google Play and Apple store, the Tesco Clubcard app comes with the warning: "If you already have the Tesco Clubcard app, you can still use it for now. But we will be retiring it soon. So, to keep enjoying the benefits you love, download the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app today."

The changes will not affect Tesco Clubcard Pay+ debit card holders or those with a Clubcard Plus subscription. A Tesco spokesperson said: "Bringing the functionality of Tesco Pay+ into the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app is a demonstration of our focus on providing products which closely align to the needs of Tesco shoppers".

Signing up for a Clubcard is free, and allows members to collect one point for every £1 spent with Tesco in-store or online and one point for every £2 spent on fuel. As well as giving shoppers points to spend in-store, Clubcard vouchers can also be used at the retailer's wide range of reward partners with vouchers available to be turned into discount codes worth up to three times their value.

It comes after another major change made by the supermarket last week which saw its same-day Whoosh delivery service expanded to 800 stores. The express service, which costs £2.99, aims to deliver groceries straight to your door within 30 minutes to an hour of placing an order.
