Tesco shoppers have been warned about rules in the supermarket's Clubcard scheme which could mean they have to pay more.
It is common knowledge that if you are a member of the Tesco Clubcard scheme then you are able to claim huge discounts when shopping at the supermarket.
This is because Tesco offers exclusive discounts to members in its stores who scan their Clubcard at the till.
However, there are rules to the Clubcard scheme which caught one customer off guard.
One mum shared her frustration with a community Facebook group over some of the rules.
She explained that her 16-year-old daughter was made to pay full price for her Tesco meal deal after being told she wouldn’t be allowed to use her Tesco Clubcard.
Tesco Clubcard members get a discount on the chains meal deal selection and by using the Clubcard, the woman's daughter would've saved 50p on her lunch.
However, she instead had to pay the full price of £3.90 rather than the member price of £3.40.
The mum's post read: "I think it's absolutely disgusting that a 16-year-old can not use a Clubcard at Tesco. She went in to buy her sandwich for dinner and you need a Clubcard for the Meal Deal and they wouldn't allow her to use it, so she had to pay full price.
"It's a Clubcard for Christ sake not alcohol. The world's gone crazy."
One retail expert, Nick Drew at the online discount store Wethrift said it was "no doubt" shocking that a 16 year old was not allowed to benefit from the discount of the scheme - particularly because of the current cost of living crisis.
Nick told the Hull Daily Mail: “However, a quick look at the terms and conditions on the Clubcard section of the Tesco website does indeed confirm that in order to become a member of the scheme, one must be a resident of the UK, and aged 18 or over.
"Taking into account that someone may be living by themselves, or even have their own children at this age, this rule does seem fairly unusual."
Nick noted that under the rules of the Clubcard scheme, there was nothing that said those under the age of 18 aren’t allowed to use their parents' or guardians’ Clubcards for their own personal use.
He added: "So, whilst technically the Tesco employee who refused service to the youngster was acting accordingly, it will understandably seem somewhat ridiculous not to allow a child - who can legally be employed by Tesco as a member of staff from the age of 16 - to benefit from the thousands of Clubcard deals and discounts that UK adults can."
Nick noted that in the vast majority of cases, Tesco customers, no matter what their age, are usually able to pass through the checkouts and make use of a Clubcard without any issues.
However, as young people are at risk of missing out on a chance to save money in the current financial climate, Nick urged Tesco to look into the issue.
The Mirror has contacted Tesco for comment.
