Tesco Clubcard changes begin from today - what you need to know

Changes to the way certain Tesco customers shop begin today (April 18) as the supermarket giant scraps its Clubcard app. Customers are being warned that if they don't switch to the general Tesco app (named the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app) they could lose their points and risk having to spend more money in store.

The general app is said to have similar functions to that of the Clubcard app shoppers currently use, including the ability to keep track of Clubcard points and scan at the till when shopping. The app can also be used for booking home delivery slots.

It's the first of a few changes that customers can expect to see in the coming months, Wales Online reports. Last month, Tesco announced changes to its delivery terms, meaning shoppers will now need to spend more money in order to qualify for these same delivery charges.

Tesco has also upped the prices of its minimum charges for delivery, in addition to increasing the delivery fee itself. In a note on its website, the supermarket said that from May 2, the minimum basket charge for delivery would increase from £4 to £5.

The minimum basket charge is added to all orders that do not meet the minimum basket value. The new minimum basket value has also been increased from £40 to £50, while the minimum order value for Click+Collect will remain at £25 for all stores.

These changes mean that Tesco will now have the highest minimum order value of all online supermarkets from May. Tesco said the changes, which affect subscribers to its Delivery Saver Plan as well as more occasional online shoppers, would help ensure its grocery home shopping operation remains as efficient as possible.

Clubcard vouchers will decrease in value

In addition to all the above, the value of Clubcard vouchers are set to decrease from June 14, when they will go from being worth three times their value, to just two times, as they are turned into Reward Partner Codes. So, customers are being urged to redeem their Clubcard points before June 13, to still get the full 3x value.

Tesco's official website states: "We’re extending the validity period on Tesco Clubcard Reward Partner codes ordered until June 13, so that they’re valid for 12 months, rather than the usual 6 months. So don’t worry, there’s plenty of time to use them at their current value before we make the change.

"If you already have a Tesco Clubcard Reward Partner code, you can still use it at up to 3x the value until its expiry date. The expiry date can be found in your order email or in the My Rewards section in the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app."

The way you collect Clubcard points for fuel will also be changing on June 14, when customers will get one Clubcard point for every two litres of fuel purchased. You currently receive one Clubcard point for every £2 spent on fuel from Tesco Petrol Filling Stations and the like (excluding Esso stations and Tesco Express shops).
