Tesco and Morrisons offering free food ahead of Christmas

Two leading supermarkets will be giving away free vegetables in the run up to Christmas.

Tesco and Morrisons are offering free carrots to shoppers so that the little ones can leave something behind for Rudolph. For the fourth year in a row, Tesco will be putting up its popular free ‘Carrots for Rudolph’ stands, reports the Mirror.

Customers shopping in select Tesco Express, Extra or Superstores should be able to find the stands near the store entrance. The festive offering is back by popular demand in the days leading up to Christmas and is available from from December 20 until Christmas Eve.

Kids are traditionally asked to leave out a mince pie and glass of milk for Father Christmas, as well as carrots for Rudolph and his seven reindeer friends. With Rudolph catered for, the supermarket is also offering deals on treats for Santa.

Clubcard holders can save 75p on Tesco Finest All Butter Mince Pies pack of six, at £1.50 down from £2.25. The sugary treat is usually left alongside a glass of cold milk or sherry such as the retailer's Tesco Finest Montepulciano D'abruzzo for £7 or Tesco Finest Pedro Ximenez for £6.50. Rudolph stands are in select large stores across the UK, with free carrots available while stocks last.

Tesco is not the only supermarket to be handing out free veg this Christmas, with Morrisons also offering a Rudolph giveaway. Carrots will be given away at all of the chain's 498 stores across the country as part of their festive celebrations.

The supermarket said it will be sending round the star of its festive advert – Farmer Christmas – to deliver the healthy reindeer snack to its stores. Unlike Tesco, the free veggies will be handed out at Morrisons stores on December 22 and 23 only.

The giveaway will focus on wonky carrots in a move to encourage families to choose 'ugly' veg more often and reduce food waste. Andy Todd, senior carrot buyer at Morrisons said: "Christmas is a magical time of year and we want to help our customers celebrate in any way we can.

"Our delicious wonky carrots are hugely popular as they help our British farmers reduce waste and are a cheaper alternative for customers. We only hope the reindeer enjoy them as much as our customers do."
