Tesco £30 leg of lamb leaves family 'absolutely mortified' as 'lambgate' debate ensues

It started with a Tesco shop and ended in a hilarious online debate.

When one woman asked her husband Clive to pop out to buy the joint for the Sunday roast who could have expected that later it would be a drama that gripped the community.

But the woman's fuming Facebook post after sending Clive to buy a leg of lamb in Tesco has become the talk of the aptly named town of Ramsbottom, in Bury, Manchester.

Rozalia Linder said she was "absolutely mortified" after discovering the price her husband Clive paid for the lamb, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The post quickly went viral on local forums and the story was soon pick up by the publication and the Mirror.

"Lambgate" was born and poor Clive earned the hashtags #SaveClive and #CliveAid.

The story began when Rozalia left the post fuming following Clive's purchase of a £30 leg of lamb from their local Tesco supermarket.

Posting a picture of the whole leg of lamb on the public What's On in Ramsbottom forum, Rozalia said: "I sent Clive to Tesco for a leg of lamb… £30.86p!!!…

"Absolutely Mortified at the price!! He did question the price and accepted the answer and paid….. however, I’m not prepared to pay this!!

"Some families don’t even have £30 a week to feed their children …. Something Needs to be done….. I Will be taking this item back to Tesco tomorrow and asking for my money back!!!!!!"

Comments then began to roll in and the debate began.

Many echoed her comments noting that the price of lamb is getting very expensive, farmers took up the debate commenting on the issues around meat pricing, farming and why lamb was so expensive while others saw the funny side of the situation.

One response to the post read: "I don't know why Clive is being lambasted".

Another added: "I know how you feel. Bought some venison the other day, that was dead dear too."

"Clive are ewe ok," quipped another.

The jokes continued. "I bet Clive is feeling a bit sheepish right now..."

While another noted: "Ramsbottom was famous for the urn, the steam train, and now Clive".

But Clive's well being also came into the frame after his costly error.

One commenter wrote: "I think we need to take poor Clive for a Sunday drink as he's no chance of a Sunday roast."

Rozalia, 52, told Manchester Evening News that she couldn't quite believe the reaction to her post and added that she's taken all the comments in good humour, although says Clive is not too impressed about it all.

Rozalia laughed: "He keeps swearing at me and telling me to go out of his room but I find it hilarious.

"I can just imagine him walking through Rammy and people beeping their horns at him saying: "Clive's alive" - and Clive will not see the funny side which makes it even more hilarious for me."

Of course there is a more serious side to the debate, and that is that the cost of food is rising, which Rozalia insisted was the point she is trying to make.

One response to the original post was: "Seriously? You can get nearly a week's shopping in Aldi for that? That's so expensive."

Another said: "Cost of living is rising. It's not poor Clive's fault."

But something good has also been achieved as a result of the perceived blunder.

While CliveAid was initially a joke, it has now been set up as a genuine GoFundMe to help all those struggling with the cost of food in the Ramsbottom area.

A local resident wrote: "Seeing as tonight it’s been widely shared that the cost of food is ridiculous at the moment, I’ve set up a genuine CliveAid go fund me, for donations to Ramsbottom Pantry (local foodbank).

"Let’s do something positive for our community."
