Terrifying moment Storm Malik 90mph gales blow entire roof off terraced house

Storm Malik’s 90mph terrifyingly strong gales ripped off the entire roof of a terraced house on Saturday.

Toney Adoniadis captured the moment on video, as the roof of the house began to flap, before a gust of wind picked it up and brought the entire thing crashing down onto the road.

“Here’s me worried about a tile that blew off my roof,” Toney said.

The surrounding area of the house was cordoned off after the incident.

Luckily, no injuries were reported as a result of the roof and its tiles falling onto the pavement below.

On Saturday, the day the roof was ripped off, yellow and amber weather warnings for high winds had been issued across northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Tragically, three people died over the weekend as a result of Storm Malik’s gale-force winds.

A nine-year-old boy, from Staffordshire, and a 60-year-old woman, from Aberdeen, were both killed by falling trees on Saturday.

A 32-year-old man also died after a lorry overturned on the M74.

Around 47,000 homes across northern England and Scotland have been left without power in the wake of Storms Malik and Corrie over the weekend.

Schools across Aberdeenshire were forced to close on Monday, as a result of power outages or storm damage.

A 47-year-old hospitality worker, from Northumberland, has been without heating and electricity since Saturday morning.

Clare Stirling-Turnbull said: “We have no electric, no heating or hot water - we do have a wood burner so can heat one room."

Clare is unable to go to relatives’ houses, as one of the children in her family of six is currently isolating with Covid-19.

On Sunday night, gusts of 92mph were recorded at Stornoway in the Western Isles, which forecasters described as "exceptionally strong".

Met Office meteorologist, Alex Burkill, said: "There is no wonder there were significant impacts such as power outages and damage to buildings.

"It is very unfortunate that things were worse than that for some people."

Fortunately, the Met Office said that the next few days would be a lot calmer, before a brief cold snap on Thursday.
